Toyota Will Sell You a Supra Racecar Starting in 2020

After finishing this year’s 24-hour Nürburgring Endurance Race, Toyota Gazoo Racing has announced that they’re launching a new racecar based on the Supra road car: the GR Supra GT4. Based on the GR Supra GT4 Concept shown at the Geneva Motor Show, this racecar is destined for customers and privateer teams.

Based on the road-going Supra, the GR Supra GT4 is developed by Toyota Motorsport GmbH. It keeps the same 3.0-liter inline-6 twin-scroll turbocharger as the road car, but tweaked for use on the racetrack. Toyota is keeping its power and torque figures secret for now, but will likely get a boost from its current 335-horsepower output to somewhere near the 500-horsepower mark.

Toyota specifically chose the GT4 category because it’s extremely popular with private race teams around the world due to its low cost and ease of entry. Additionally, these cars are eligible to participate in a variety of races from the Super Taikyu Series in Japan, the GT4 European Series, the Michelin Pilot Challenge Series in the U.S., and the VLN Endurance Championship Nürburgring.

Helping Toyota hone the Supra into a GT4 racecar, the carmaker joined forces with three technical partners: Ravenol, Pirelli, and Akrapovič. Ravenol will provide lubricants, while Pirelli will collaborate on tire development and Akrapovič will cooperate on developing motorsport-specific exhaust systems.
