The 2021 Toyota GR Supra is Quicker and Handles Better
Did you just buy a 2020 Toyota GR Supra? Well, that’s too bad because here comes the 2021 model, and guess what? It comes with more power as standard.
While the US is going gaga over the availability of the 255-horsepower 2.0-liter 4-cylinder for the first time, we’re going to be concentrating on what makes the GR Supra, a Supra: the inline-6. For this iteration, the 3.0-liter unit gets a power bump to 382 horsepower at 5,800-6,500 rpm and 499 Nm of torque at 1,800-5,000 rpm—that’s a jump of 27 horsepower and 4 Nm of torque, respectively from the previous 3.0-liter.
The increased output results from a slew of upgrades throughout the engine. The new dual-branch exhaust manifold, with six ports instead of two, improves heat management. A new piston design reduces the engine’s compression ratio from 11:1 to 10.2:1.
Toyota projects that the new engine will reduce the Supra’s 0-100 km/h time from 4.1 to 3.9 seconds.
Apart from the new engine, the 2021 GR Supra gets retuned chassis as well. It adds lightweight aluminum braces that tie the strut towers to the radiator support to increase lateral rigidity, along with front and rear bump stops and new damper tuning. The steering, suspension, stability control, and active differential were all retuned as well to make it stable through quick transitions.
Mechanical differences aside, the 2021 GR Supra also gets a slew of standard driver assist features such as full-speed dynamic cruise control, blind spot monitoring, parking sensors with emergency brake function and wireless Apple CarPlay.
Marking the arrival of the 2021 model, Toyota is also launching yet another limited-edition model: the A91. This special appearance package adds a carbon fiber lip spoiler, matte black wheels, C-pillar graphics, carbon fiber mirror caps, and blue contrasts on its leather interior.

Toyota's Giving Away Free GR Supra Posters!
Toyota really thinks that they’ve got a car with street cred in the all-new A90 GR Supra. And because of that, they think it’s deserving a bit of your bedroom or living room space; for that, they’re giving away free limited-edition posters.
The catch is, you need a US postal address. But if you do, all you need to is sign up with your name, email, and address and wait for Toyota to ring you back. If they do, expect the poster to be shipped between 6 to 8 weeks.
The poster’s design is similar to what lead photo above and features the GR Supra in Prominence Red with a blueprint-like layout as the backdrop.
There is no mention of how many copies of these things are available, but for those who can’t get one (or don’t have a US postal address), you can other images as a wallpaper for your laptop or smart device. If you prefer, you can also switch up your ringtone to one that features the GR Supra’s sonorous engine note.
Just go to this website and you’ll be prompted to sign up for a free poster, or scroll down for the free ringtones and wallpapers.

Could the Philippines Get an Entry-Level Toyota GR Supra?
One year after the debut of its flagship GR Supra, Toyota is now expanding its global offering by making available its A90 with a turbocharged 2.0-liter engine. This new engine enables the GR Supra to shed around 100 kilograms of weight, while giving it a perfect 50-50 front-to-rear balance.
Fitted with a single twin-scroll turbocharger, the GR Supra 2.0 makes 258 horsepower and 400 Nm of torque. Mated to an 8-speed automatic, it dispatches the century mark in just 5.2 seconds up to a maximum governed speed of 250 km/h.
According to the GR Supra’s Chief Engineer, Tetsuya Tada, the new engine cuts 100 kilograms off the GR Supra’s weight. And because the engine is more compact, it’s positioned closer to the center of the vehicle, helping it secure a 50-50 front-rear weight balance.
Even more interesting is that since the GR Supra 2.0 is positioned as an entry-level model, it’ll be made available in what Toyota calls, the “Live” specification. This strips the sportscar down to the most basic essentials: 18-inch wheels, a 4-speaker system, and seats upholstered in Alcantara. However, for those who want a bit more luxury, it can be speced to match the 3.0-liter version with features such as leather upholstery, power seats, and a 12-speaker JBL sound system all available.
Production for the GR Supra 2.0 starts in March of this year.
According to Toyota, 1,150 examples of the GR Supra have already been sold in 2019 with a great majority of them—95 percent—being the higher-specification model.
Now, the question is: will the Philippines stand to get the entry-level GR Supra? In the past, Toyota Motor Philippines has said that the country will only offer the 335-horsepower 3.0-liter inline-6 version. However, a closer look at the VIN numbers suggest that there’s still remote possibility of seeing the 2.0-liter version here.
For the Asian market, Taiwan and the Philippines both share the same model code: DB41 for the 3.0-liter version. Recently though, Taiwan has also managed to secure the model code DB21, which is the model code for the 2.0-liter version. This means that a specification matching Philippine requirement is available. All it takes is for Toyota Motor Philippines to give the green light, and we could be seeing a second variant in the local GR Supra range.

Toyota Starts Own Heritage Parts Program with Supra
After Mazda and Nissan got into the re-manufacture of parts for heritage cars, Toyota is now going to do the same, and the first one to benefit from Gazoo Racing’s Heritage Parts Project? The A70 and A80 Supra.
The project will have Toyota reproduce spare parts that were no longer available, and sell them as genuine parts. They will be made available not just in the Supra’s home market of Japan but also for overseas markets such as North America and Europe.
Details on the specific parts and sales period will be announced at a later date, but Toyota did mention that for the A70 Supra, they’ll have items such as propeller shafts, door handles, fuel sender gauge, weather strips, and emblems available; while for the A80 Supra, it’ll cover headlamps, door handles, and brake booster.
Toyota says that these heritage parts will be available for purchase from Toyota dealers the same way as normal genuine parts or through the Toyota Gazoo Racing website.

The Toyota GR Supra is the Best Sportscar...in Germany
Well, well, well…how’s this for a surprise. Despite being practically twins underneath, the Toyota GR Supra aka A90 aka the “Zupra” managed to beat its BMW twin to become the best sportscar. The most interesting twist? This award was given by Germans.
The GR Supra nabbed a Golden Steering Wheel—considered as one of Europe’s most prestigious new car awards competition. The Golden Steering Wheel awards are presented by Bild am Sonntag, Germany’s most popular Sunday newspaper, and the leading car magazine Auto Bild.
In a unique twist to the usual car awards, the Golden Steering Wheel uses a combination of both popularity vote and expert opinion to determine the winners. First, readers selected their favorites from more than 50 eligible new cars, with the top three in each category then put to the test by a team of expert journalists, racing drivers, and celebrities at the Lausitzring circuit. Each car was assessed against set performance criteria and accorded points scores to determine the overall winners.
This is the second time the GR Supra won the Golden Steering Wheel award with the first being in 1982.
Aside from the GR Supra, the only other Japanese model on the list is the Mazda CX-30 which won for best small SUV. Other winners are the Audi A1 Sportback (small car), BMW 1 Series (compact), Jaguar I-PACE (mid-sized SUV), and the Audi e-tron (large SUV).

Yes, You Can Order the P 9.92-Million Toyota GR Supra GT4 Racecar
If you find the Toyota Vios Race Car a bit too tame, why don’t you consider a Toyota several notches higher? After showing off the GR Supra GT4 racecar last July, Toyota Gazoo has finally revealed its final specs and eye-watering price. Oh, and yes, you can buy it even from the Philippines.
On sale from March 2020, the GR Supra will be offered to customer teams in Europe first, followed by North America in August, and then Japan/Asia in October.
The GR Supra GT4 is based off the road-going GR Supra, but tweaked in the hands of Toyota Motorsport GmbH in Germany.
The BMW 3.0-liter inline-6 has been re-tuned to develop 430 horsepower—close to a 100-horsepower jump from the regular GR Supra and 650 Nm of torque. This is then mated to a 7-speed sports automatic transmission with paddle shifters, and a mechanical limited slip differential driving the rear wheels. An Akrapovič exhaust system will be fitted and Ravenol will provide first-fill lubricants.
The front splitter and rear wing are made of natural fiber composite, contributing to an overall weight of just 1,350 kilograms. And following the specification of the GR Supra road car, the front suspension will be MacPherson strut, and rear suspension will be multilink with KW dampers at the front and rear The braking system is enhanced through the use of a dedicated brake caliper for racing, six-piston front and four-piston rear, while running on 305/660-18 Pirelli tires.
The GR Supra GT4 then comes with a high-strength roll cage, and an FIA-standard racing seat with a 6-point racing harness. The interior will feature a carbon fiber instrumental panel with a display and steering wheel specifically designed for GT4 competition.
As for the price, it’ll cost € 175,000 (~ P 9.92 million) and this is excluding things like tax, customs duties, logistics fee, and the like. Take note: despite having a full set of headlights and taillights, the GR Supra GT4 isn’t road legal. Still, for those who want a unique track toy, you can send an email to TRD Business Div. Department No. 1, Motor Sports Business Unit: info_supragt4 [at] toyota-cd.co.jp. They will handle your sale.

Yup, the 2020 Toyota GR Supra Is a Sportscar*
The Manila Sports Car Club or MSCC, just updated “The List,” a rundown of eligible cars that can gain its owners entry into the exclusive club. You can scroll through the list for yourself, but this story focuses on one new entry: the 2020 GR Supra.
That’s right. Toyota’s new flagship sportscar, the one they co-developed with BMW and built in Austria under a contact manufacturer (Magna Steyr) can now potentially gain you entry into the MSCC. This marks the first time the Supra’s ever been considered as a “sportscar” perhaps because all previous versions had 2+2 seating, while the new one is strictly a 2-seater. Of course, by extension, the G29 Z4 also gains entry this year.
At least that settles the debate that the GR Supra’s a sportscar. The only question left now is: is it really a Toyota?

For the Price of a Vios, A Tuning Shop Can Make Your Toyota GR Supra Manual Dreams Come True
One of the major beefs people have (including us) with the 2020 Toyota GR Supra is that it’s made of BMW parts. Well, apparently relying on German technology has one unexpected perk: you can have it with a manual transmission.
Because the GR Supra uses BMW’s B58 3.0-liter inline-6 engine, a Texas-based tuning shop named European Auto Group (EAG) has figured that swapping out the 8-speed automatic for a 6-speed stick shift is all just a matter of flipping through the BMW parts catalog and getting the right one. It turns out, the conversion uses off-the-shelf components with the exception of the shift lever itself which is a custom-made part.
EAG is no stranger to converting automatic-only sportscars into manual ones; they’ve already done so with the Ferrari 458 and Lamborghini Huracan. Of course, because the shop is highly specialized in doing the swap, it’s not going to be cheap. The swap costs around USD 12,000 (~ P 626,700) and takes 30-45 days to complete.
Still, the company is throwing in some tweaks to boost the GR Supra’s output to 425 horsepower and even their own 4-year / 50,000-mile (80,000-kilometer) warranty, so that is something.

P 30,000 is Enough to Bump Up the Toyota GR Supra's Power by 25 Percent
It looks like the era of simply plugging a car into a computer for a tune is really upon us. Case in point is Litchfield and their work on the 2020 GR Supra.
The U.K. tuning company which has worked with BMWs says they were able to unlock an additional 85 horses with just an ECU remap. This brings the GR Supra’s output to 420 horsepower, and this is without any hardware changes.
At this point, 420 horses seem like a nice even number, but Litchfield says they’re not done yet. They’re working on a set of bolt-on modifications which will pump up the power count anywhere between 440 to 450 horsepower. Nice.
Since the tune isn’t final yet, Litchfield can’t reveal prices yet, but if we were to look at BMWs that received similar work, expect to fork out around USD 600 or around P 31,348 for the tune. The tune and exhaust package should bring everything around to USD 1,500 (~ P 78,371) which isn’t a lot of money for lots more power.

This Guy Paid P 107 million for His 2020 Toyota GR Supra
How much are you willing for a 2020 Toyota Supra? While some enterprising dude has already tacked on a P 350,000 mark up, how does a cool P 107 million sound? Well, that’s how much John Staluppi paid for his Matte Storm Gray unit.
A Toyota dealer based in the U.S., Staluppi took possession of the first-ever 2020 GR Supra to roll off the production line. Dubbed “Global #1,” he paid a cool USD 2.1 million for it last January at the Barrett-Jackson auction in Scottsdale, Arizona.
What makes his car special is that it is the only GR Supra in the world that will have a VIN number that ends in 20201—with “2020” representing the year the Supra was re-introduced and “1” marking it as the first vehicle to roll off the production line.
Aside from the Matte Storm Gray paint job, this GR Supra is part of the U.S. launch edition. For that, it carries red mirror caps, matte black wheels and a red interior with carbon fiber inserts.
The GR Supra aside, Staluppi also received a goodie bag including a Toyota racing suit and a signed photo from Toyota Motor Corporation President Akio Toyoda. Toyoda also signed the #1 Supra’s engine cover to commemorate the first Supra produced in 20 years.
Proceeds from the auction will benefit the American Heart Association and the Bob Woodruff Foundation, which serves veteran and military families.

Someone is Selling His 2020 Toyota GR Supra for P 5.35 million
You want that 2020 Toyota GR Supra now? Like right now? Well, that’s going to cost you. With limited supply and big hype, gorging would-be buyers was bound to happen; but no one expected it to happen less than 24 hours after its Philippine unveil. But happen it did.
In the Facebook group, “JDM tayo Paps :)” someone who goes by the name of “Gnimras Ikir” is selling his slot to a 2020 Toyota GR Supra. The cost to get ahead of everyone else is a cool P 350,000. The listing, which we posted below details that the P 350,000 fee is simply for him to transfer his slot to another interested GR Supra buyer. The rest of the P 5 million (we suspect that in reality, it’s the P 4,990,000) is paid once the unit arrives. What’s more confusing? He claims that his unit is already in the Philippines—a day after its official launch! This is contradictory to the 4 to 5 months of waiting time that Toyota Motor Philippines said.
In his Facebook profile, Gnimras Ikir (aka Ricky Lou Sarming) says he is a luxury car agent/data analyst/sales executive/store supervisor.
Given the GR Supra’s high-profile nature, we asked Toyota Motor Philippines to confirm if Mr. Sarming is indeed the country’s first-ever customer, and if selling his slot to another buyer might have violated any part of his sales or reservations agreement.

Want to Buy a 2020 Toyota GR Supra? Here's Everything You Need to Know (w/ Brochure)
Enough of the leaks (both from the Batangas Port and dealers) and race track cameos, the 2020 Supra is finally in Manila and if your urge still hasn’t waned, here’s everything you need to know about Toyota Motor Philippines’s new flagship sportscar.
- The fifth-generation model aka A90 marks the first time the Supra’s been made available through official channels; in this case, through Toyota Motor Philippines.
- Officially, its name isn’t “Supra,” but “GR Supra.” This signifies its position as part of Gazoo Racing’s GR line which is “an authentic sports model that extends the pure joy of driving to everyday life.” Other members of the GR family? The Toyota 86 (now named 86 GR in Japan) and the Vitz GR.
- The sole Philippine variant of the GR Supra is powered by a 3.0-liter single-turbo inline-6 with twin-scroll technology. It makes a healthy 335 horsepower and 500 Nm of torque driving the rear wheels. The sole transmission option is an 8-speed automatic.
- It has a 50/50 front-to-rear weight distribution and has a wheelbase-to-tread ratio of 1.55 to 1—one of the smallest among mass production sportscars.
- It has Adaptive Variable Suspension, Limited Slip Differential as standard equipment.
- The design philosophy behind the all-new Supra is “Condensed Extreme” and with that, Toyota made it as low and as wide as possible.
- It comes with 19-inch forged alloy wheels with special Michelin tires. The front measures 255/35R19 and the rears are 275/35R19. Peeking through these tasty wheels are 4-piston front ventilated and single-piston rear ventilated disc brakes.
- There’s only one interior color option: Black, but it’s well-loaded nonetheless. The seats are covered in Alcantara and feature 8-way power adjustment with memory, lots of carbon fiber bits, and a 12-speaker JBL surround sound system.
- For the driver, there’s an 8.8-inch TFT LCD gauge cluster, heads-up display, and an additional 8.8-inch widescreen infotainment display.
- 7 airbags, ABS with EBD, vehicle stability control, front and rear parking sensors with reverse camera are all standard safety equipment.
- Citing limited global supply and extremely high demand, Toyota Motor Philippines says the GR Supra is available in “limited quantities.” That said, they will not say how many they plan to sell, but they will “try their best to meet the demand.” For the record, Toyota says that the specialty car segment where the GR Supra competes in sees monthly sales of about 60-85 units per month—and they want a piece of that pie.
- Despite having close to 70 dealers nationwide, the 2020 Supra is only available through 16 GR Performance certified dealerships. These are the only outlets authorized to sell and service the Toyota sportscar. If you want to place an order, they are: Toyota Alabang, Toyota Commonwealth, Toyota Makati, Toyota Manila Bay, Toyota Otis, Toyota Pasong Tamo, and Toyota Quezon Avenue for Metro Manila; Toyota Bacoor, Toyota Batangas, Toyota Calamba, Toyota La Union, Toyota San Fernando, and Toyota San Pablo for Luzon; Toyota Cebu and Toyota Mabolo for Visayas; and Toyota Davao for Mindanao.
- The price for the GR Supra is dependent on the color. Prominence Red is P 4,990,000, while Lightning Yellow, Deep Blue Metallic, White Metallic, Silver Metallic, Ice Gray Metallic, and Black Metallic are all P 5,050,000; and the Matte Storm Gray is P 5,090,000.
- Toyota dealers will not stock the GR Supra, so interested customers will have to place an order for one. The lead time is 4 to 5 months given its assembly is all the way in the Magna Steyr plant in Graz, Austria.
- The warranty is the standard 3-years / 100,000 kilometers. Modifications that will alter the Supra in any “technical way” will void the warranty. Others, such as the installation of aftermarket wheels, exhaust, and the like will be dealt with on a case-to-case basis.
- And speaking of aftermarket parts, Toyota Motor Philippines is studying to bring in TRD performance parts for the GR Supra, so that’s something.

Toyota Will Sell You a Supra Racecar Starting in 2020
After finishing this year’s 24-hour Nürburgring Endurance Race, Toyota Gazoo Racing has announced that they’re launching a new racecar based on the Supra road car: the GR Supra GT4. Based on the GR Supra GT4 Concept shown at the Geneva Motor Show, this racecar is destined for customers and privateer teams.
Based on the road-going Supra, the GR Supra GT4 is developed by Toyota Motorsport GmbH. It keeps the same 3.0-liter inline-6 twin-scroll turbocharger as the road car, but tweaked for use on the racetrack. Toyota is keeping its power and torque figures secret for now, but will likely get a boost from its current 335-horsepower output to somewhere near the 500-horsepower mark.
Toyota specifically chose the GT4 category because it’s extremely popular with private race teams around the world due to its low cost and ease of entry. Additionally, these cars are eligible to participate in a variety of races from the Super Taikyu Series in Japan, the GT4 European Series, the Michelin Pilot Challenge Series in the U.S., and the VLN Endurance Championship Nürburgring.
Helping Toyota hone the Supra into a GT4 racecar, the carmaker joined forces with three technical partners: Ravenol, Pirelli, and Akrapovič. Ravenol will provide lubricants, while Pirelli will collaborate on tire development and Akrapovič will cooperate on developing motorsport-specific exhaust systems.

The 2019 Supra May Be the Last Toyota to Offer a Crisp, Raw Sound
In the world of automobiles, sound has a sprawling lineage. From the revved-up putter of the Ferrari Formula 1 car to the banshee wail of the Lexus LFA, the sound of a car can be as iconic as the chassis or any other component. But it’s more than just aesthetics: Sound matters to the experience of street driving, too.
Not surprisingly, today’s cars sound very different from those of the past. Due to emission regulations and tighter tolerances within the engine, manufacturers have had to adjust their process—and rightly so. What ends up being sacrificed, though, is the purity of sound that captivates the driver. Also reining in the roar of contemporary cars are strict government regulations around noise that have made it nearly impossible to run an exhaust all the way through the back of the car. This is the sort of limitations that Toyota Supra Chief Engineer Tetsuya Tada had to work with.
In developing the Supra’s exhaust note, Tada coaxed and protect the 3.0-liter inline-6’s natural sound rather than force it. That’s why he didn’t set out to create a sound. Instead, he believed that if the initial sound could be unrestricted, the voluptuous “vroom” that typifies the aural racing experience could come out. The result, Tada says is, “a wonderful, piercing sound that just travels forever.”
“When that natural sound reaches the driver, that’s when he can really feel the condition of the car. The driver can react to that, which allows him to drive and control the car better,” Tada continued. “That’s what makes it fun.” In short, it’s fun and classic at the same time.
Sadly, in the whisper-quiet era of hybrid and electrified vehicles, Tada believes this may be the last time he can offer up a car with a crisp, raw sound. It is his gift, of sorts, to the enthusiast and the car community. “Being able to create a car like this, I’m hoping that enthusiasts will be able to enjoy it for the next 20, 30 years moving into the future,” Tada says.
