McLaren F1 Designer Set to Take On Recaro with New Lightweight Sports Seat
Recaro may have some new competition from one unlikely source: Gordon Murray. The mind behind the McLaren F1, and now head of Gordon Murray Design has licensed his lightweight iStream automotive seat which will see production by the first quarter of next year.
Codenamed IS-001, the iStream automotive seat boasts a 30 percent weight saving when compared to a conventional modern seat thanks to the use of composite panels and tubular frame construction. The target is for fully-trimmed units to be made available for both OEM and aftermarket applications.
Despite the lightweight design (the composite structure weighs less than 12 kilograms), the anti-submarining design satisfies all European automotive requirements. It can achieve a low seating position, and yet, still offers four-way adjustment.
The iStream seats have been licensed to Transcal, a U.K.-based company that specializes in creating bespoke interiors.
