Appealing to the Sixth Sense: All-New Mazda3 Goes for an Intuitive Driving Experience

Without question, the 2020 Mazda3 is now the benchmark by which all other compact cars will be measured against. With an elevated level of design, craftsmanship, and engineering, it’s a feast for all the senses—even taste, if you dare lick the leather. More than that, the all-new Mazda3 creates an intuitive driver experience backed up by a full suite of driver assistive features called i-Activsense.

The all-new Mazda3 is the first compact car to offer a 360-degree camera in the Philippines that helps drivers maneuver through tight spaces. Moreover, it’s the first one in its class to offer a complete suite of driver assist features aimed to heighten driver confidence. Standard on the Premium and Speed variants is i-Activsense, a series of advanced safety technologies that uses milliwave radars and cameras. They support safe driving by helping the driver recognize potential hazards, and pre-crash safety technologies which help to avert collisions or reduce their severity in situations where they cannot be avoided.

Among the technologies integrated in the Mazda3’s i-Activsense system are:

Mazda Radar Cruise Control (MRCC)
Aside from holding a set speed along the highway like any typical cruise control system, the Mazda3’s MRCC also automatically adjusts the speed of the car to maintain a preset distance to the vehicle ahead. When the vehicle in front moves out of the way or you change lanes, the system resumes the originally set cruise control speed. MRCC also alerts the driver to brake harder when it detects abrupt braking by the vehicle ahead. It then resumes forward motion once the car in front accelerates forward.

Driver Monitoring System
Inattention and fatigue are a common cause of accidents. The Mazda3’s Driver Monitoring utilizes an infrared camera and LEDs mounted in the center display to check for drowsiness, inattention and fatigue. If the system determines the situation is dangerous, it sounds an alert and primes the Smart Brake Support (SBS) system to reduce the chances of collision.

Lane Departure Warning System (LDWS)
When the Mazda3 travels at speeds above 60 km/h, LDWS employs forward-sensing cameras to monitor lane markings on the road ahead. When unintended lane departure is detected, LDWS warns the driver by vibrating the steering wheel or sounding an alert.

Cruising and Traffic Support (CTS)
Driver fatigue is common when dealing with traffic jams. With the Mazda3’s CTS, it automatically controls the vehicle speed to keep a suitable distance from the vehicle ahead. It also assists with steering torque to maintain proper lane position through bends. When lane markings are not detected, the system follows the path of the preceding vehicle. In this way, CTS promotes a safe, comfortable driving experience.

Front and Rear Cross Traffic Alert
When entering T-junctions, FCTA uses front-side radars to monitor diagonal blind spots and warns drivers of approaching vehicles. The system operates at speeds up to approximately 10 km/h. Meanwhile, when reversing, side-facing sensors on the rear bumper detect oncoming traffic and the system alerts the driver of the moving vehicle, preventing a possible collision.

Smart Brake Support (SBS) Rear
When reversing, the Mazda3’s SBS Rear system detects low objects behind the car. If SBS-R’s rear facing ultra-sonic sensor detects obstacles behind the vehicle as speeds between 2 and 8 km/h and the system determines the driver is unaware of the obstacle and judges a collision is imminent, it applies the brakes to help reduce collision damage.

Together with other technologies such as a 360-degree camera, windshield-projected Active Driving Display, and G-Vectoring Control Plus (GVC Plus), the Mazda3’s i-Activsense promotes a deeper level of driving pleasure while heightening safety to a whole new level. Since driving requires paying constant attention, making split-second judgement can mean the difference between life and death.

Through i-Activsense, driving is made less stressful and more natural for everyone. Employing lessons learned over the years in realizing Jinba-Ittai—the state of oneness between car and driver, Mazda has decided to undertake a thorough and scientific study of human beings. The result is the Mazda3’s Human-centric Design—a means of maximizing human abilities (including intuition), achieving a level of driving comfort and safety never before experienced in its class.
