Honda Confirms All-New City Will Get Turbo Power

As Nissan prepares to debut its all-new Almera for the ASEAN region, Honda wasted no time in teasing the all-new, fifth-generation City which will make its global debut by the end of November.

While Honda opted not to release any teaser photo, they did promise that their all-new sub-compact sedan will “exceed its past success and break free from old beliefs and limits.” That’s certainly a very tall order given that cumulatively, the City has amassed over 4 million in sales globally.

Now, Honda did confirm one thing: the all-new City will be getting a turbocharged mill. Though no specs were revealed thus far, the safest bet would be a downsized turbo, probably a 1.0-liter 3-cylinder found in the European market Civic. While it sounds puny on paper, this engine actually churns out 122 horsepower and 200 Nm of torque—a recipe for a bonafide pocket rocket, especially if Honda decides to pair it with a manual (for now though, it’s sure to get the Earth Dreams CVT). Moreover, it delivers up to 33 percent better mileage than the current City.

Aside from its turbo powertrain, the all-new City promises “better dimensions beyond its class” and will “provide value beyond imagination.” Highfaluting words indeed, but if Honda keeps to its promise, it’s sure to become a class leader in the sub-compact sedan segment.

For now though, stare at the all-new City’s official logo. For eagle-eyed readers, it looks to be the same typeface as the Japanese market Fit/Jazz which was just launched at the 2019 Tokyo Motor Show.
