2020 Honda City Scores Perfect 5-Star ASEAN NCAP Safety Rating
The all-new 2020 Honda City managed to score a perfect 5-star ASEAN New Car Assessment Program (ASEAN NCAP) safety rating.
Scoring 86.54 points overall, the all-new City is awarded with the organization’s highest safety rating using the revised (and stricter) 2017-2020 assessment. The City received 44.83 points in the Adult Occupant Protection (AOP) category, 22.82 points for Child Occupant Protection (COP), and 18.89 points in the Safety Assist Technologies (SAT).
Honda’s newest sub-compact sedan is fitted with 4 airbags, ABS with EBD, seatbelt reminder, and stability control across all its variants in Thailand resulting in the high score. That said, it’s understood that Honda will also offer them as well on variants to be sold across Southeast Asia as well. Blind Spot Visualization (in this case, Lane Watch) is also available in certain variants as well.
MIROS Director-General and ASEAN NCAP Chairperson, Ts. Dr. Siti Zaharah Ishak said: “We are excited to have another 5-Star car in the line-up of ASEAN NCAP assessed vehicles. Although the City was assessed twice prior to this, we can see there have been significant improvements in the number of safety technologies that are equipped in this new model as a standard fitment. I am also pleased that in addition to the existing safety assist technologies ASEAN NCAP is assessing, which will be available in variants that will be launched soon, Honda has also added an Emergency Stop Signal technology that consumers will benefit in mitigating any unwanted collision.”
The 2020 model marks the third Honda City assessed by the ASEAN NCAP in which the first was in 2012, while the second in 2014. In both occasions, it has shown 5-star safety performances.

Honda Cars PH Discounts Current City as All-New Model Looms
If you’re a fan of the current Honda City, this may be your last chance to snag one with some hefty discounts.
With Honda Cars Philippines shutting down its Sta. Rosa, Laguna assembly plant, Honda’s very own labor union confirmed that the City stopped production there as of February 1, 2020. This means stocks will become limited until the arrival of the next-generation City from Thailand, which should be pretty soon from the looks of things.
That being said, if you’re in the market for a brand-new City, now may be the right time to get one. With Honda extending its Drive to 2020 promotion, the City 1.5 VX Navi CVT is now just P 963,000! If you want something bigger, say a 7-seater SUV, the Philippine-made BR-V 1.5 V is now just P 1.125 million.
If these two formerly Made in the Philippines models aren’t your thing, the CR-V Touring Diesel is still available and it comes with a hefty P 107,000 cash discount (and a P 10,000 fuel voucher as well), while the Brio 1.2 S M/T is available with a P 28,000 all-in low downpayment.
For financing customers, the City 1.5 VX Navi CVT, BR-V 1.5 V CVT, and Brio 1.2 S M/T are all available through a 10 percent special all-in cash-out with payment terms of 36 up to 60 months through BPI Family Savings Bank, RCBC, Security Bank Corporation, China Bank Savings, and Bank of Commerce only.
The CR-V Touring Diesel 9AT is available through 15 percent or 20 percent low net cash out with payment terms of 36 up to 60 months through BPI Family Savings Bank, RCBC, Security Bank Corporation, East West Banking Corporation, Philippine National Bank, Philippine Savings Bank, China Bank Savings, Bank of Commerce, Sterling Bank of Asia, Maybank Philippines Inc., BDO Unibank, Inc., United Coconut Planters Bank, and Robinsons Bank only.
Other financing promo option offers are the Free One Month Amortization, available for 60 months payment term only and the Low Monthly Amortization, available for 15 percent and 20 percent all-in downpayment for 36 to 60 months payment term.
All these offers include three (3) year LTO Registration and Chattel Mortgage. Free one (1) year Comprehensive Insurance with Acts of Nature is also available through select bank partners.

The All-New 2020 Honda City Debuts Exclusively With Turbo Power (w/ 12 Photos)
Honda finally pulls the wraps off the all-new, fifth-generation City sub-compact sedan in Thailand and with it brings a promise of re-imagining the segment by being “better in every dimension” and “delivering a value beyond everyone’s imagination.”
Initially developed as a regional model for the ASEAN market, the City has since become a very important model for Honda. Selling more than 4 million units since its first generation, 70 percent of its sales remain in ASEAN. With that, the all-new City caters to ASEAN tastes and sensibilities, but will also fulfill its role as standout small car sold in over 60 countries worldwide.
Compared to the outgoing model it goes for a wide and low appearance. With that, it sits 10 mm lower, but is wider by 53 mm and longer by a whopping 113 mm.
In terms of looks, the all-new City doesn’t take a radical departure not like its hatchback sibling, the Jazz/Fit. For the 2020 model, Honda has retained the City’s angular styling which should appeal to the current fan base. That said, it does get one feature shared with the all-new Jazz/Fit: the side mirrors are now mounted on the doors (done for better visibility). LED taillights are standard across the line as are LED daytime running lights. 15-inch rims are found at all four corners.
Inside, it further emphasizes its width with a horizontally-oriented interior. Compared to before, there’s far more soft-touch points and premium materials such as real metallic accents. A traditional two-gauge cluster greets the driver, but at the center is an 8-inch touchscreen infotainment with Apple CarPlay and Android Auto. In Thailand, the City gains the Honda Connect system, a system that offers additional connectivity between driver and car.
Under the hood, there’s only one engine choice and that’s a 1.0-liter 3-cylinder VTEC Turbo engine. Thanks to a direct injection system, low inertia turbocharger, and electronic waste gate, it delivers torque equivalent to a 1.8-liter engine while delivering 33 percent better fuel economy than the outgoing 1.5-liter. The power output is an outstanding 122 horsepower and 173 Nm of torque. The sole transmission is the Earth Dreams CVT.
Also, for the first time, the all-new Honda City is available in a RS variant. The RS variant comes with a complete set of sporty aero parts including a gloss black front grille with RS logo emblem, sporty front bumper and grille, LED Headlights with LED DRLs, LED fog lights, black power-retractable side door mirror with integrated turn signal indicator, gloss black trunk spoiler, and larger 16-inch wheels. This model also gets suede leather seats with red stitching, a multi-information display with red illumination, and an exclusive color: Ignite Red.
Now comes the most surprising part. For the Thailand market, prices of the all-new City have remained largely the same as before. The previous City was sold there for 550,000 to 739,000 Baht. Now, the fifth-generation City comes in from 579,500 to 739,000 Baht.

Honda Confirms All-New City Will Get Turbo Power
While Honda opted not to release any teaser photo, they did promise that their all-new sub-compact sedan will “exceed its past success and break free from old beliefs and limits.” That’s certainly a very tall order given that cumulatively, the City has amassed over 4 million in sales globally.
Now, Honda did confirm one thing: the all-new City will be getting a turbocharged mill. Though no specs were revealed thus far, the safest bet would be a downsized turbo, probably a 1.0-liter 3-cylinder found in the European market Civic. While it sounds puny on paper, this engine actually churns out 122 horsepower and 200 Nm of torque—a recipe for a bonafide pocket rocket, especially if Honda decides to pair it with a manual (for now though, it’s sure to get the Earth Dreams CVT). Moreover, it delivers up to 33 percent better mileage than the current City.
Aside from its turbo powertrain, the all-new City promises “better dimensions beyond its class” and will “provide value beyond imagination.” Highfaluting words indeed, but if Honda keeps to its promise, it’s sure to become a class leader in the sub-compact sedan segment.
For now though, stare at the all-new City’s official logo. For eagle-eyed readers, it looks to be the same typeface as the Japanese market Fit/Jazz which was just launched at the 2019 Tokyo Motor Show.

Going for a CVT is Now Cheaper Than a Stick with the Honda City 1.5 S
Honda Cars Philippines is about to warp your sense of reality by introducing a new variant of its City sub-compact sedan, and get this: it’s an automatic variant that sells less than its manual transmission counterpart.
Officially named the City 1.5 S CVT, the retail price is P 8,000 less than the 1.5 E M/T (P 820,000). Yet, it continues to offer best-in-class performance with its 1.5-liter SOHC i-VTEC engine making 120 horsepower and 145 Nm of torque. And of course, since it comes with the Earth Dreams CVT, expect it to have excellent fuel efficiency as well.
More than just the impressive powertrain, the City 1.5 S CVT offers one of the best value for money proposition with standard LED DRLs, 15-inch wheels (steelies with full covers), tilt/telescopic steering wheel, all power amenities, and keyless entry. In fact, the only things you lose compared to the next tier 1.5 E are front fog lights, the fancier radio, and speakers (the 1.5 S gets a 1-DIN audio system with Aux/USB inputs and 2 speakers).
The Honda City 1.5 S is now available at all Honda dealerships and comes in the following colors: Lunar Silver, Modern Steel Metallic, Crystal Black Pearl, and Taffeta White.

Honda Cars Philippines is Recalling Recalled Accord, Civic, City, CR-V, and Jazz Units for Airbags
Three years ago, Honda Cars Philippines was one of many automakers who had to issue recalls due to defective Takata airbag inflators. At that time, 19,624 units were affected. And while they were able to fix some of them, it looks like they’ll have to rework 14,074 of these units.
These units, covering the Accord, Civic, City, CR-V, and Jazz need a second replacement of the front passenger airbag inflator. The list consists of:
- 2003 Honda Accord: 290 units
- 2001-2005 Honda Civic: 1,651 units
- 2006-2009 Honda Civic: 225 units
- 2003-2008 Honda City: 1,652 units
- 2009 Honda City: 38 units
- 2003-2006 Honda CR-V: 9,551 units
- 2007-2009 Honda CR-V: 145 units
- 2002-2008 Honda Jazz: 500 units
- 2009 Honda Jazz: 22 units
While there have been no reported cases of injuries, Honda is tasking their 42 authorized dealerships and service centers to replace the defective front passenger airbag inflator for free. The entire process will take just one hour to finish.
Honda Cars Philippines is already in the process of notifying the owners of the affected vehicles.
