All-New 2020 Hyundai Sonata Debuts 1.6-liter Engine Making 180 Horsepower

After showing off what the 2020 Sonata looks like, Hyundai has now pulled the wraps off Sonata Turbo—the sportier variant of their executive sedan.

The looks are, admittedly, quite interesting, but it’s worth saying that this marks a bolder styling direction from the Korean carmaker. For the Sonata Turbo, it debuts something that Hyundai calls its “Parametric Jewel” grille. Compared to the Cascading Grille design seen in other variants of the Sonata, this one’s wider and is flanked by air ducts beneath the headlights for reduced drag and improved aerodynamics. At the back, it’s got a unique wing-shaped rear spoiler with small aero fins that aid in high speed stability as well as a shapelier bumper and twin-tip exhausts.

Matching the looks, the Sonata Turbo introduces the world to Hyundai’s first next-generation engine: a 1.6-liter Smart Stream turbo direct injected gasoline (T-GDi) engine making 180 horsepower. What’s more, it’ll be made available with a 6-speed manual as standard and an 8-speed automatic as an option.

Hyundai previewed the Sonata Turbo at the Seoul Motor Show in South Korea. They’re set to offer more details on it at the upcoming New York Auto Show later this month.

This Is No Joke: the Kia Stinger is Launching at the Manila International Auto Show

Check the launch story and specs here.

Okay, so while other automotive publications will do their best to pull your leg today (it is April 1, after all), here’s one serious bit of news: Philippines, we are getting the Kia Stinger. Yes, read it loud and proud: WE ARE GETTING THE KIA M*THERF*CKING STINGER.

Sent in by an anonymous tipster, the first photo (the headlight) was supposedly snapped at Kia Philippines’s office last Friday. The same tipster said that the car is undergoing final checks en route to its Philippine debut at the Manila International Auto Show. The second one (the taillight) is said to be a part of Kia’s teaser campaign leading up to the unveil proper. (UPDATE: a third photo has now surfaced, sent in by a reader).

The Stinger is Kia’s first-ever rear-wheel drive sedan and in order to deliver world-beating dynamics, they’ve benchmarked the likes of the Audi A4, Lexus IS, and BMW 4 Series. The platform is ultra-stiff, made of 55 percent advanced high-strength steel.

Our tipster isn’t sure what engine option Kia Philippines is bringing in, but based on the taillight photo, it looks it’ll be the high-end turbocharged V6 because of that telltale rear brake duct by the quad exhaust tips. If that’s the case, it’ll offer 365 horsepower and 510 Nm of torque—enough to scare the wits out of a Ford Mustang or even the Chevrolet Camaro. Now, before anyone else points it out, yes, it could simply be the turbocharged 4-cylinder but with the high-end GT package. If that’s the case, it’ll still have 255 horsepower and 352 Nm of torque—enough grunt to run with the likes of the Subaru WRX. Either way, it’ll have an 8-speed automatic.

At a glance, this news of the Stinger’s “unboxing” at MIAS may mean that we have gotten our predictions wrong. Or did we? Our tipster also said that Kia’s not just unboxing one, but two models at the show. Given Kia’s hints last February, we really think it’s the Stonic sub-compact SUV.

If the Stinger and potentially, the Stonic aren’t enough to please you, Kia Philippines will also be displaying the Sorento, Grand Carnival, Sportage, Soluto, and Picanto at the show.

Damn, Kia…it looks like you’re ready to rule 2019.

Alonso Tries the Dakar-Winning Toyota Hilux; Calls It Fun (Water is Also Wet)

Ex-Formula One drivers seem to have a lot of free time on their hands. When he’s not racing at the FIA Endurance Championship (WEC), Fernando Alonso is filling up his schedule by testing race cars from various disciplines. His latest foray has him drive the Dakar Rally winning Toyota Hilux.

Spending two days in the Kalahari Desert, Alonso along with WEC teammates Sébastien Buemi and Kazuki Nakajima drove the Toyota Gazoo Hilux which won the 2019 Dakar Rally last January. In racing form, the Hilux is powered by a 5.0-liter V8 engine putting out 385 horsepower and 620 Nm of torque.

For the test, Alonso drove the Hilux on two layouts around the desert, one spanning 8 kilometers and the other, 17 kilometers.

Fernando Alonso: “I followed the Dakar and thanks to TOYOTA Gazoo Racing I had the opportunity to come here to South Africa to test the Dakar-winning Hilux. I have tested different series and different cars these past couple of years and this was a great chance. It has been fun; certainly, different to what I am used to driving, but very interesting. We built up speed slowly, learning lap after lap. It’s not easy to read the bumps and to know how much speed to carry but I became more confident each time. The Hilux feels great; it has good grip and balance, lots of power and impressive braking. It felt incredible to drive this car.”

Could this mean Alonso would like to try his hand at the Dakar Rally too? It’s too early to tell, but at least for the next coming months, his schedule will be jampacked including a second attempt at winning the Indy 500 race this May.

Yes, There's Now a Road Rage Package Available for the Nissan Navara

You know Metro Manila’s traffic situation’s hit a new low if companies are now starting to offer a “Road Rage Package.” And before you ask, no, it still doesn’t involve installing a Gatling gun or flame throwers—at least not yet. Instead, we’re talking about some lightweight armoring, you know, to protect yourself against people with guns.

Weighing about 300 kilograms, this lightweight armoring is made of Level BR4 polyethylene panels that reinforces the doors and other metal parts, bullet-resistant ballistic glass, and run-flat tires.

According to the developer, Cavite-based Impenetra Armor Protective Systems, it’s enough to resist most common handgun attacks—from a .38 caliber to .357 Magnum. And with that sort of weight penalty, it shouldn’t affect overall vehicle performance, especially if it’ll be installed in pickup-based passenger vehicles (PPVs) like the Nissan Terra or Toyota Fortuner and pickup trucks like the Ford Ranger or Mitsubishi Strada. Plus, it’s said to be quite affordable. The system, installed in a Nissan Navara for example, will set you back just P 1.5 million.

Impenetra will be displaying some examples at the upcoming Manila International Auto Show if you’re interested to see their work.

Foton Just Showed Off the Production Version of Its Modern PUV

Mid last year, Foton Motor Philippines, Inc., said they were introducing their own version of the Modern PUV. Now, as one of the leading commercial vehicle brands in the country, Foton has finally unveiled the production version of their Modern PUV: the Foton Jeepney or F-Jeep for short.

“In support to the major development plan of the government, Foton Philippines also aims to build a rationalized, modern, well-managed, and environment-friendly transport system where drivers and operators will experience stable, adequate and dignified livelihoods through the all-new Foton Jeepney.” announced Foton Philippines President Rommel Sytin.

As far as Modern PUVs go, the F-Jeep is one of the most advanced ones. Based off the Tornado 2.4C, it has a rear body designed and built by Centro Manufacturing Corporation, one of the country’s leading provider of truck bodies and truck-related equipment and services.

The F-Jeep is powered by a Cummins ISF 2.8 CRDi engine mated to a 5-speed manual. It generates 116 horsepower and 260 Nm of torque from as low as 1,300 rpm. And because it’s part of Foton’s Blue Energy line-up, it’s fully Euro 4 compliant.

The F-Jeep is a Class 2 Public Utility Vehicle (based on the Philippine National Standards) holding a maximum capacity of 24 passengers—16 seating and 8 standing. However, unlike other modern PUVs, the 5.65-meter length, 1.82-meter width, and 2.61-meter height means head- and legroom for passengers. In addition, it has wider doors making ingress and egress easier.

Besides the additional room to stretch around, the F-Jeep is also equipped with air conditioning, GPS navigation, a CCTV camera, dashboard camera, and an entertainment system with portable WiFi connection to keep passengers in comfort while on the road. There’s even a cashless tap card based-collection system too.

“It’s time to make a step forward with our entries for the PUV modernization.” said Sytin. “The launch of the Foton Jeepney will not just provide a comfortable riding experience for the commuters. We also aim to promote the capabilities of the national icon of Philippine transportation.” he added.

Selected 2017-2018 LS 500 and LS 500h Units Affected by New Recall Says Lexus Philippines

After having to recall them for a faulty start-stop system, Lexus Philippines has announced a new safety recall concerning selected number of 2017-2018 LS 500h and LS 500 models.

This newest recall, affecting 51 units (20 units of the LS500h and 31 units of the LS500) involves its run-flat tires. The units in particular are:
  • LS 500h (20 units) – Produced from October 11, 2017 to June 5, 2018
  • LS 500 (31 units) – Produced from December 19, 2017 to June 28, 2018
According to a statement released by Lexus, these vehicles may have improperly installed run-flat tires during the assembly process. If left unchecked, there’s a possibility that a crack might develop on the tire’s sidewall reinforcement layer. Lexus says this will result in abnormal noise and/or abnormal vibration. However, in the most extreme circumstances, it may lead to the tire tread getting separated reducing vehicle stability.

Lexus Philippines has already started contacting affected owners. The vehicles in question will undergo an inspection, and if necessary, have the affected tires replaced with new ones at no cost to the customers.

Kia's Masterpiece Concept Previews Land Cruiser Prado Rivaling SUV

Naming a car a “Masterpiece” certainly puts a lot of expectation of how it’ll look and drive, but it seems Kia has no problem calling their latest large SUV concept just that. Ladies and gentlemen, meet the Kia Masterpiece.

Like the recently-launched Telluride 7-seater SUV, the Kia Masterpiece is filled with upright and purposeful lines. The front of the car features Kia’s latest interpretation of its “tiger nose.” Unlike previous treatments though, the grille’s been made to extend outward across the whole front section, incorporating the LED headlights, even. It’s the same treatment at the back as well.

The best takeaway here though is that the Kia Masterpiece is previewing the Mohave, Kia’s Land Cruiser-rivalling go-anywhere SUV. For the latest version though, it’ll likely drop the body-on-frame design and will instead use the Telluride’s ultra-stiff platform. Kia says it will also have a “powerful all-wheel drive system” to match the rugged looks.

Kia hasn’t shared any information to the Mohave’s potential release date, but given the Masterpiece’s almost production-ready design, it’ll likely be sooner rather than later.

Hyundai's Adding Yet Another SUV to Their Line-Up

Hyundai’s going all-in on crossovers and SUVs since they’re adding one to slot below their Kona sub-compact crossover. Meet the Venue.

Unlike Hyundai’s other SUV nameplates which were named for a particular place: the Kona, Tucson, Santa Fe, and Palisade, this newest one can be, according to Hyundai, “anywhere a place where people want to be seen, or in this case, inside the vehicle.” The Korean carmaker says it’ll be trendy, with a unique style “perfect for Hyundai’s newest and smallest crossover.”

The Venue will mark its global debut at the New York International Auto Show in less than a month’s time.

Autoplus Will Likely Have the Most Awesome Display at the Manila International Auto Show 2019

Every year, the Autoplus display always seems to grab the lion’s share of attention at the Manila International Auto Show (MIAS). For the 2019 installment, it won’t be different as Autoplus is set to wow the crowd with its display of iconic supercars.

The distributor of Motul oils and lubricants in the country will showcase the Ferrari F40—a mid-engined, rear-wheel drive built from 1987 to 1992. With only 1,315 units produced globally, this twin-turbo V8-powered limited-edition masterpiece will surely delight car enthusiast and show goers alike.

Besides the F40, Autoplus will also be displaying the Lotus Exige V6 Cup and McLaren 570S GT4—both fresh from Motul’s very own 300V Superfast Track Event.

The Lotus Exige V6 Cup is a race version of the Exige two-door sports car built by Lotus Cars since 2000. This track-oriented version first launched in 2012 has the same engine as that of the Exige S, but the V6 Cup differs in its bespoke exterior and interior trims which are more track-focused.

Meanwhile, the McLaren 570S GT4 is the track-oriented version of the 570S. Using a 3.8-liter twin-turbo V8, it makes 570 horsepower and 601 Nm of torque. Compared to the “regular” 570S, it has an air jack suspension system, center-lock magnesium wheels shod with Pirelli racing slicks, and a race-style cooling system.

The Autoplus pavilion is located inside the main hall. The Manila International Auto Show 2019 starts from Thursday, April 4 and runs until Sunday, April 7, 2019. Doors open at 10 AM.

The Second-Generation Honda Brio is Arriving in April

Remember the cute orange concept car that Honda showed off at the Philippine International Motor Show last year? Everyone knew it was a signal that the all-new, second-generation Brio is arriving soon. What people didn’t know is “soon” means this April.

With the Manila International Auto Show looming near, April is already a busy month for motoring. Sadly, for enthusiasts, two of the most highly-anticipated vehicles won’t be present. Mazda already showed off its all-new Mazda3 last week and now, Honda’s following suit with the all-new Brio which is dropping in the last part of April.

Shown off at the Gaikindo Indonesia International Auto Show last year, the Made-in-Indonesia Brio promises a “above-class feel.” It gets styling cues close to the current-generation Mobilio, down to the squarish headlights and angular front-end. It will also swap out the glass tailgate for a more conventional one.

Based on the teaser photo, it looks like Honda Cars Philippines will release the RS variant and with that, it’ll get special bumpers and larger wheels. Interestingly, it looks like they’ve opted to remove the black roof package.

Designed for the Indonesian Eco Car Program, the Brio there gets a 1.2-liter 4-cylinder engine making 90 horsepower and 110 Nm of torque. With those sort of power figures, HCPI could very well just decide to keep this engine, or they can opt to bump it up to a 1.3-liter to mirror the previous-generation model.

Honda is also expected to keep Brio as a safety leader in its segment with features like airbags and ABS with EBD fitted as standard equipment.

Isuzu Philippines, TESDA Hold Graduation Ceremony for Auto Mechanic Training Program

Isuzu Philippines Corporation, in pursuit of its corporate social responsibility objective of uplifting the lives of the youth through free training and education, held last month the graduation ceremonies of the 15th batch of the Isuzu-TESDA Auto Mechanic Training Program at the TESDA (Technical Education and Skills Development Authority) Region 8 Training Center Compound in Barangay Abucay, Tacloban City, Leyte province.

On the same occasion, IPC and TESDA conducted the recognition ceremony for the 16th and 17th batches of the Program.

Started in November 2008 conceptualized by Isuzu Motors Limited (IML), the vocational training program has seen IML, IPC, and TESDA collaborating to impact the lives of a total of 248 disadvantaged youth. IML supports the ISUZU-TESDA Auto Mechanic Training Center Project by providing funds needed for the project operation while IPC has provided technical guidance to both students and trainers. On the other hand, TESDA provides the training center, equipped with all the needed equipment, to implement the training programs up to National Certificate (NC) Levels III and IV. After the trainees’ graduation, both entities actively endorse these graduates to industry firms (preferably within the IPC network) that need highly skilled mechanics for permanent jobs.

The 15th batch had a total of 18 graduates come up on stage to receive their certificates. The moment these youngsters receive their certificates have often been a highly emotional experience, as their parents tearfully embrace their sons or daughters, knowing that their lives have most likely turned for the better from then on.

Thirty two of them have chosen to work overseas and the number is increasing year by year. In October 2018, two of the graduates joined a dealership in Tokyo, Japan and one graduate currently works for Isuzu.

With executives and officers of Isuzu Motors Limited from Japan, IPC, and BM Domingo Motor Sales Inc as witnesses, the graduating Batch 15 students as well as the upcoming Batch 16 and 17 trainees gathered together with their families to convey their gratitude for this once-in-a-lifetime opportunity.

Porsche Rep: Ceramic Brakes Are for Looks and Value, Not for Track Days

Here’s something interesting: if you do hard track days in your Porsche, you’re better off with the traditional steel discs. This was revealed by Porsche Australia’s technical representative at the market launch of the 992-series Porsche 911 there.

A report from Wheels via Autoblog says that because the Porsche Ceramic Composite Brake or PCCB don’t leave a build-up of brake dust like traditional ones, they’re for “People who don’t like cleaning their wheels.”

For extensive track use, Porsche’s technical representative, Paul Watson, explained that ceramic discs can still degrade, especially if you’re hard on the brakes. As heat builds up, it can degrade the carbon fibers in the disc. In other words, if regular track days are part of your routine, it is best to stick to steel ones.

Asides from aesthetics, Watson also points out that going for the PCCB may be ultimately down to cost versus performance. This pricey brake rotor option can last up to four times longer with less brake pad wear compared to cast iron ones. It will improve the re-sale value according to owners, if that is worth something. However, it’s worth saying that PCCBs are fragile, chipping them alone may entail an outright replacement.

Safety Advocate Wants to Probe Subaru/Toyota Valve Spring Recall

A US-based safety advocate wants the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration (NHTSA) to investigate how Subaru, but more specifically, Toyota is handling the valve spring recall after complaints are starting to mount of engines knocking and stalling after the recall work was done.

A report from Automotive News says Jason Levine, the executive director of the Center for Auto Safety is calling the NHTSA to review the ongoing recall remedy after numerous customer complaints began to surface about engines seizing after the defective valve springs were replaced. He went so far as to suggest that Toyota and Subaru “cease recall repairs and provide vehicle owners who received the repair a loaner [vehicle] until the problem is identified.”

Though the valve spring recall is affecting various Subaru models, Levine is zeroing in particularly on the Subaru BRZ / Toyota 86.

Owner forums have suggested that Toyota dealer technicians may not be as adept at handling horizontally-opposed Boxer engines as Subaru, resulting in the engines breaking down after the valve spring recall work had been done on them. One theory is that Toyota technicians may be improperly applying RTV sealant to the engine during re-assembly. Loose pieces of cured sealant could potentially clog oil passages restricting oil flow and potentially causing damage. This has been corroborated by a spokesperson from Subaru of America who confirmed that only “one person returned for a post-recall fix.”

At this point, it’s worth pointing out that fixing this valve spring defect is a very intricate process and requires a very good understanding of how Boxer engines work. Thus, it’s advisable that only certified technicians handle it. It could possible serve as a lesson that if you plan to buy a Subaru-engined car, perhaps it is best to stick to something with a Subaru badge upfront.

For security and peace of mind, Motor Image Pilipinas says they are pointing owners of affected vehicles to their C5 – Pasig and Manila Bay dealerships because the valve spring work can only be done by their most senior (and seasoned) technicians. Since this work will require about 12 hours, it is critical to set an appointment ahead of time to make sure your unit can be accommodated. Regardless, any work on the valve spring at any authorized Subaru dealer carries a separate one-year warranty against any defect.

Pagani Likens His Hypercars to Patek Philippe Watches

Horacio Pagani looks soft spoken and humble, after a lengthy roundtable with the motoring press, he spent some time signing posters, scale models, and other knick-knacks. His mannerisms, a far cry from the ostentatious hypercars that bear his name.

Born in Argentina, Pagani came from a family of bakers. Yet, at an early age, he showed a keen interest in the mechanical. Moving to Italy to pursue his passion, he ended up working at Lamborghini where he built the Countach Evoluzione—a one-off prototype used by the Italian supercar maker as a testbed. It was here when he toyed with the idea of building cars using carbon fiber composites. Unfortunately, when he approached Lamborghini’s management at the time, they refused, saying that if Ferrari didn’t have an autoclave (basically an oven used to bake and cure carbon fiber) they didn’t need one. Pagani ended up borrowing money on his own to buy an autoclave, and later broke off forming the car company that bears his name in 1992.

Despite the company growing to 177 artisans, Horacio Pagani remains in charge of everything. He has a hand in every part of the design and engineering, and even personally meets every new owner as they accept delivery of their new car.

Today, Pagani is credited for starting the “hypercar” with the Zonda, and now, they continue to push the envelop further with its successor, the Huayra. Pagani blends art and science, design and engineering thereby making his cars look unique.

Pagani revealed that his cars are inspired by objects with the same art and science, design and engineering fusion. He says he’s always looked at jet fighters and endurance racers as inspiration. “They look beautiful and purposeful at the same time,” he says.

He also reveals that making a Pagani is like putting together a high-end Swiss watch, particularly a Patek Philippe.

“When I got to see Patek Philippe watches being made, I realized that they too combine the precision of machine-made parts with the warmth of human craftsmanship. It’s the same feeling with have at Pagani Automobili. The parts are all precision-made by machines, but the way each of them are designed and assembled, it’s imbued with the unmistakable human touch,” he says.

Given how each Pagani production run is limited and how much they can cost, Patek Philippe’s slogan fits perfectly to Pagani’s creations as well: “You never actually own one. You merely look after it for the next generation.”

MMDA Reiterates: No Window Hour in Effect Only on Major Roads, Mabuhay Lane Routes

The Metropolitan Manila Development Authority (MMDA) is reminding the public that its number coding “no window hours” scheme is only in effect at all major roads and Mabuhay Lane routes. This clarification was made by MMDA General Manager Jojo Garcia following erroneous rules on traffic number coding schemes went up online.

In a statement, Garcia said: “We have agreed to standardize the ‘no window hours’ scheme on national roads and roads listed as Mabuhay Lane,” after a meeting with the Metro Manila Council (MMC) which represents the 17 local government units in Metro Manila.

Garcia said members of the MMC, the policy-making and governing body of the MMDA, have agreed also to amend their existing number coding schemes and traffic code implemented in their jurisdiction except for cities and municipalities that don’t implement the number coding scheme such as Marikina, Navotas, and Taguig.

The Unified Vehicular Volume Reduction Program (UVVRP) or the number coding scheme is enforced during weekdays from 7 AM to 8 PM on major thoroughfares in Metro Manila, including EDSA.

Under the scheme, vehicles banned on a certain day of the week depending on their licensed plate or conduction sticker ending digits cannot traverse major thoroughfares and Mabuhay lane routes for any hours between 7 AM and 8 PM.

Is the Philippines Ready for a P 100-Million Car? Pagani Now Under The Autohub Group

On its 20th anniversary, The Autohub Group announces that they have been appointed as the Exclusive Selling Agent of Pagani in the Philippines. The deal was formalized by the arrival of Mr. Horacio Pagani, the founder of Pagani Automobili in Manila yesterday after The Autohub Group announced it last year.

Since every Pagani automobile is bespoke, designed around the dreams of its owner, The Autohub Group is in the process of setting up a Pagani Lounge in Bonifacio Global City where interested buyers are given the chance to explore various customization options. If the buyer has specific requirements, for example wishing to have his or her Pagani shipped to another country besides the Philippines, The Autohub Group can make those arrangements.

“We first met Horacio Pagani back in 2015 in Shanghai, China and then we visited the Pagani factory in Modena, Italy in the same year,” reveals Mr. Willy Tee Ten, Autohub Group President. “He’s a really humble guy considering what he did for the whole automobile industry. Now that he’s in Manila, I’m looking forward to seeing his creations on our roads very soon.”

Mr. Tee Ten reveals that several people have already expressed interest in acquiring a Pagani, but he cannot elaborate further citing customer privacy. He did give hints that pricing for the standard model starts at 1.056 million Euros (~ P 62.67 million). Looking through the options list, some bespoke features can quickly increase the price. The “Full Carbon Bodywork” for example will set owners back 112,500 Euros (~ P 6.67 million)—enough to buy a Porsche. It won’t be an exaggeration to expect a Pagani to cost something north of P 100 million.

As Horacio Pagani set foot in Manila, he does so in the wake of an important milestone. Coinciding with The Autohub Group’s 20th anniversary, Pagani is also celebrating the 20th year since the brand’s first commercial release—the Zonda C12. Debuting at the 1999 Geneva International Motor Show, it fused Formula One technology with the science of space rocketry, rightfully earning it the status of “the hypercar.”

Even at 20 years old, the Zonda remains one of the most iconic cars ever made. As a self-taught car designer, Pagani took 7 years to develop the Zonda, combining emotion and functionality, art and science at each step of the way.

Today, the Zonda’s successor, the Huayra is just as celebrated as its predecessor. It has helped Pagani grow from the dream of a single man to a company with 177 artisans, all driven by the same passion that birthed the Zonda. Each car that comes out of the Modena-based atelier is a hand-built work of art, continuing the original spirit that defined the first Zonda.

Chevrolet Looks to China for Next-Generation Captiva

As Chevrolet was looking for a replacement to its Daewoo-engineered Captiva crossover, they turned to Baojun, the Mainland China joint-venture between SAIC and GM. The result is that hey got a Baojun 530, changed a few things and voila, here’s the 2019 Captiva. The odd thing is that SAIC’s also going to market the Baojun 530 as the MG Hector. How’s that for a plot twist?

The kicker here is that in the Philippines, Chevrolet and MG are both distributed by the same company, The Covenant Car Company, Inc. (TCCCI). In fact, you could go as far to say they’re joined at the hip because they pretty much share the same dealer network, too. Thus, if the Baojun 530 does make its way locally, there’s an equal chance it’ll be badged as a Chevy or an MG (our bets are it’ll be an MG).

Regardless of whatever badge it’ll have when it gets here, the Baojun 530 / Chevrolet Captiva / MG Hector has a rather peculiar exterior styling marked by its split headlight design. Baojun calls it “Future Eye” while Chevy marketers are still trying to come up with a fancy name for it.

Under the hood is a 1.5-liter turbocharged engine with 148 horsepower and 250 Nm of torque. Thanks to a low-inertia turbo that comes into play as low as 1,000 rpm, the peak torque is actually achieved at just 1,600 rpm. Mated to the engine is a CVT with multiple modes. Unsurprisingly, in India, it’s offered with a 2.0-liter turbodiesel engine borrowed from the Jeep Compass.

Setting the Baojun / Chevrolet / MG apart from its competitors, it’ll be offered in both 5- and 7-seater configurations. And get this, it’ll be priced between the B- and C-segment crossover class and yet, it’ll have features like LED headlights, a panoramic sunroof, and more. For those curious, in China that means an SRP starting at RMB 88,800 (~P 695,000), while in Thailand, they’ve promised an SRP of below one million Baht (~P 1.66 million).
