Get Lucky This 2020 with These Car Buying Feng Shui Tips
People are keen on finding out what the Chinese New Year beholds for them and the ways in which they can enhance their good fortune. An age old practice among the Chinese, Feng Shui is a popular custom that is believed to aid one attain favorable opportunities when done properly.
From architecture and fashion to interior design and art, Feng Shui is about arranging one’s spaces, belongings, and other components of life to achieve harmony and balance. Yet what might be a little known fact to many is that one can easily integrate Feng Shui on cars. In fact, it is said that the basics of car Feng Shui is similar to those that are applied for the home.
In anticipation of the Chinese New Year, the Manila International Auto Show (MIAS) team consulted with Feng Shui expert Maxima Tiu for some auspicious tips that will prove helpful for those in the automotive industry as well as those who are planning to buy a vehicle this 2020.
Determine your reason
Consider the purpose why you seek to apply Feng Shui for your car. Is it because you want to attract good luck when using your car or do you simply wish to increase positive energy while you’re using the car? According to Tiu, this is the fundamental question that one should answer before moving forward with car Feng Shui.
Know your element
The next step is determining one’s element based on one’s animal sign or birth year. This information will then be used as a basis for the proper Feng Shui of the vehicle. The year of the Metal Rat follows the basic principles of five elements–Wood, Metal, Fire, Water, and Earth.
The last digit of your lunar birth year will determine your element:
- Metal: Birth years ending in 0 or 1,
- Water: Birth years ending in 2 or 3,
- Wood: Birth years ending in 4 or 5,
- Fire: Birth years ending in 6 or 7,
- Earth: Birth years ending in 8 or 9
Once all the preparatory steps have been accomplished, it’s time to apply Feng Shui. According to Tiu, there are lucky colors assigned for each element for the Year of the Rat. This guide can help one attract positive energy and likewise ward off negative and unfavorable incidents.
For the Wood element, lucky colors are green and red while the off colors or colors to avoid is white. For the Metal element, one may opt for cars in white, silver, gold, black, blue, and green. On the other hand, colors to avoid are bright ones such as red, yellow, and orange. For those under the Fire element, one must stick to colors such as red, yellow, and orange while colors of green, blue, and black must be avoided. For the Water element, go for cars in shades of blue, black, and green while staying away from red, yellow, and orange. Lastly, those under the Earth element must stick to white, red, and brown while avoiding green, black, and blue.
According to Tiu, the same rules apply even when simply choosing car accent colors and accessories. However, Maxima Tiu cautions that car Feng Shui tips only serve as a guide and protection. At the end of the day, success still relies on one’s actions and attitude towards life.
This Year of the Rate, find your lucky car and car accessories at the Manila International Auto Show (MIAS) 2020: Dynamic Decade, which is happening on April 2 to 5 at the World Trade Center Metro Manila and the Philippine International Convention Center.

Chevrolet Philippines Rises with the Trailblazer Phoenix (w/ Specs)
It may just be a coincidence, but the newest Chevrolet Trailblazer variant sure sounds like a tie-up with the latest X-Men movie. Shown at the Manila International Auto Show, the Trailblazer dons some aftermarket bits and rises as: the Trailblazer Phoenix.
The Trailblazer Phoenix gains a front hood decal, side strip decals, a rear bumper scuff plate and lots of matte black stuff. Yup, you’ll find the material everywhere from the fender flares, pillars, rear spoiler, tailgate applique, and even the Chevrolet bowtie emblems. Wow, they should have called it the Matte Black Edition instead, huh.
Inside, it gets a leather steering wheel with infotainment controls and like other Trailblazer models, a 7-inch touchscreen infotainment system with Apple CarPlay and Android Auto.
Since the Trailblazer Phoenix is a styling thing, the mechanicals remain unchanged: a 2.8-liter Duramax Diesel with 200 horsepower and 500 Nm of torque, a 6-speed automatic with active select manual mode, and an Electric Power Steering (EPS) system.
Priced at P 1,780,888, the Trailblazer Phoenix rises up in 7 colors: Pull Me Over Red, Summit White, Switch Blade Silver, Dark Shadow Metallic, Black Meet Kettle Metallic, Blue Me Away, and Oxford Metallica Brown.
Come to think of it, the name also sounds like a basketball team too.

Hyundai Philippines Going Against Explorer, CX-9 with Palisade SUV (w/ Specs)
Evoking imagery worthy of being called a flagship, Hyundai Asia Resources, Inc., brings in the Palisade—Hyundai’s newest three-row SUV that combines exceptional roominess with a bold, distinctive design and premium interior feel and amenities.
The Palisade’s styling conveys dignity with style in an understated theme that demonstrates clear differentiation worthy of a flagship SUV. From the front, a dominant, bold and wide cascading grille clearly represents a premium SUV. Separated composite headlamps and a vertically-connected forward lighting signature create a strong and distinctive front demeanor. A powerful, extended hood profile creates an impressive road presence, while bold C-pillars and a panoramic glass side graphic convey generous third-row spaciousness. Full volume over-fenders and body sides offer muscular detailing. The rear view emphasizes a wide and stable stance via sinuous detailing and a vertical LED rear taillamp design.
The interior design combines a sense of relaxation and comfort creating a serene environment with 7-passenger seating standard for family adventures. It offers premium quilted Nappa leather, while a smooth woodgrain trim wraps around the instrument panel. A one-touch second row seat allows for easy access into and out of the third-row seat. For more convenience, the third row offers power-folding/unfolding and reclining seats.
The Palisade also features an industry-first, innovative new roof vent diffuser design that can provide a focused, partially-diffused or fully-diffused stream of air to rear passengers. This new diffuser vent design provides quieter rear air conditioning airflow, draft-free operation, more uniform distribution of air and the capability for a focused stream of air whenever desired.
Front and rear suspension width was maximized on Palisade, for enhanced roll stiffness and stability. The Palisade front steering knuckles and rear carriers are made of aluminum, while front lower arms have been optimized and lightened via a new engineering design, resulting in reduced unsprung weight and improved responsiveness.
Palisade also achieves best-in-class body torsional rigidity through a variety of methods, including a multiple ring-shaped structure and hot-stamped door-ring parts that provide greater strength and rigidity. In addition, its torsional rigidity, when equipped with a sunroof, is nearly identical to versions without a sunroof.
For the Philippine market, Hyundai installed the R2.2 turbo diesel engine. In this guise, it has 200 horsepower and 442 Nm of torque. It also features a shift-by-tire 8-speed automatic, and probably to differentiate it from the Santa Fe, Electronic All-Wheel Drive (HTRAC) with Multi-terrain Control.

Kia Philippines's Surprise Unboxing is the Civic RS Fighting Forte GT (w/ Brochure)
All eyes may have been on the Stinger, but Kia Philippines sprung a surprise unboxing at the Manila International Auto Show: the Forte GT. With the price of the Stinger pegged north of three million pesos, the Forte GT is perhaps the more attainable sedan for Filipinos seeking performance.
To that end, the Kia gods gifted the Forte a 1.6-liter turbocharged direct injection engine pushing out 204 horsepower and 264 Nm of torque—outputs eclipsing the likes of the Civic RS Turbo and matching the Forte’s close mechanical twin from another mother, the Hyundai Veloster. And like the Veloster, the Forte swaps gears via a dual-clutch system with 7 forward gears.
Mechanically, the Forte GT also swaps out the torsion beam axle rear end for an independent suspension setup and at all four corners are 17-inch alloy wheels with performance tires.
With Kia Philippines continuing to sell the “regular” Forte, the Forte GT is distinguishable by its sportier, more angular bumper and various red highlights scattered around the car. It also gets a flat-bottomed steering wheel, larger bolstered seats, and of course, like all new models from Kia Philippines, an infotainment system with Apple CarPlay and Android Auto.
The Kia Forte GT is priced at P 1,650,000 while the Forte LX A/T is pegged at P 1,095,000 and the EX A/T at P 1,195,000.

The Kona Electric is Hyundai’s first-ever all-electric compact crossover. Appealing to people with active, eco-focused lifestyles, it fuses an eye-catching exterior with confident handling, and of course, zero tailpipe emissions.
The Kona Electric employs organic geometric body forms and sporty contours for a modern, eco-oriented appearance. Its distinctive design is reinforced by the car’s voluminous, futuristic body styling. The front presents a future-focused, modern presence, with a cross-hatch, debossed design element for the grille area. The electric charging port is seamlessly integrated with this grille area for convenient, head-in parking at charging stations. The front view is flanked by aero-tuned flared fenders that enhance its road presence. It’s further enhanced by a separated-headlight design signature, with LED Daytime Running Lights above and available high-efficiency LED headlights below.
The sleek and simple interior accentuates the modern and efficient exterior design. The Kona Electric exclusive shift-by-wire drive controls are supported by a center console upper bridge element with an integrated open-access lower storage bin for convenience. The audio/navigation display incorporates advanced infotainment features.
The Kona Electric powertrain employs a high-efficiency 150-kW (201-horsepower) permanent-magnet synchronous electric motor supplied by a high-voltage 64 kWh lithium-ion battery. It should offer 415 kilometers on a single charge as well.
It was developed with a focus on enhanced driving dynamics and responsive performance for a variety of urban and multi-surface driving conditions. The front suspension features a MacPherson strut system using an innovative sub-frame bushing design for enhanced comfort and reduced NVH. At the back, there’s a multi-link rear suspension design for overall agility, ride comfort, and stability with minimal ride vs. handling compromises.
The price of the Hyundai Kona Electric is pegged at P 2,388,000.
Meanwhile, the Ioniq is Hyundai’s electric vehicle built on a dedicated platform. The Ioniq offers a sleek, aerodynamic silhouette with a class-leading 0.24 Cd derived from carefully designed surfaces. Its fluid exterior shape and smooth air flow channels emphasize aerodynamic body lines and design forms.
The Ioniq Electric offers pure electric mobility with a 28 kWh lithium-ion polymer battery for an estimated driving range of 200 kilometers. The Electric motor has an estimated maximum output of 88 kW (120 horsepower) routed through a single-speed reduction gear transmission.
In keeping with its exterior, the interior of Ioniq captures the model’s futuristic qualities, with a ‘Purified High-tech’ design concept. A smooth, elegant and clutter-free theme and efficient use of interior space complements a logical, structured approach applied to the layout of controls for intuitive operation. Materials for the interior were chosen with an ecologically-sensitive focus and are used to create a simple and clean look throughout the car, giving the interior a sleek, light and purified feel.
The price of the Hyundai Ioniq Electric is pegged at P 1,868,000.

Motor Image Pilipinas, the exclusive distributor of Subaru vehicles in the Philippines shows off a sportier variant its Subaru XV crossover dubbed the Subaru XV GT Edition. Making its debut at the Manila International Auto Show, it’s now available for booking at all authorized Subaru dealers nationwide.
The special edition of the highly popular crossover vehicle is a ground-breaking collaboration with renowned engineering company Giken Co. Ltd and Masahiko “Jack” Kobayashi. Mr. Kobayashi is former Chief Designer (Head of Global Advanced Design Studio) at Subaru Corporation and was responsible for the exterior design of more than 12 Subaru production models, including the legendary WRX STI.
This special edition XV is based on the XV 2.0i-S EyeSight and adds a well-made and integrated aero kit elements such as a front bumper lip extension with integrated canards, side skirts, roof spoiler, and rear bumper extension. All in all, it gives the XV an even sleeker and sportier look.
Complementing the new kit is a set of 18-inch alloy wheels, special carpets and even leather seats, inspired by the high-performance grand tourers from Germany and Britain. Furthermore, the Subaru XV GT Edition gets dual side-view monitors which makes parking and maneuvering even easier.
Subaru believes this iteration of the Subaru XV is a game-changer for Subaru as it caters to the Filipinos’ preference for dynamic and sporty vehicles while still maintaining a form that suits a “ready for anything” lifestyle.
The new Subaru XV GT Edition is a prime choice for consumers who wish to elevate the fun in driving, as it combines Motor Image’s in-depth understanding of the market, Mr. Kobayashi’s expertise, as well as Giken’s experience and Japan-standard production capability in Southeast Asia.
“Motor Image worked with Giken and Kobayashi-san, because they share our enthusiasm for design and creating fun and exciting products. I know this will be the start of an exciting collaboration for Subaru customers. We believe this GT edition will help create excitement in Asia and offer customers who want an even sportier version of the XV a new and unique look. We expect that the Philippines will be one of the key markets for the Subaru XV GT Edition,” said Mr. Glenn Tan.
Pricing for the Subaru XV GT Edition is pegged at P 1,768,000 or a P 100,000 premium over the Subaru XV 2.0i-S EyeSight.
Mr. Kobayashi originally trained and practiced as a fashion designer in Tokyo before graduating with a degree in Transportation Design. In a 25-year career with Subaru, he was known as the ‘hit maker’, after designing numerous successful models, including the original Outback, which was the world’s first sports-utility wagon, several generations of the Legacy and Impreza, the current WRX and WRX STI sports saloons, the Levorg sports tourer and the first-generation XV. He is now an independent designer.
Meanwhile, Giken is an award-winning engineering company founded in 1964. Holding numerous patents in Japan, South Korea, and the United States, it has established itself as an industry leader in the design and manufacturing of technological and material handling systems. Giken is a global supplier of aero-parts and other passenger car components to Subaru and other major Japanese car brands.
Jeep Philippines Expands SUV Range with Compass and Cherokee
Auto Nation Group has big plans for the Jeep brand this 2019 as they show off a wider line-up at the Manila International Auto Show that includes the new Renegade, all-new generation Wrangler, and now, the refreshed Cherokee and Compass compact SUVs.
Marking its return to the Philippine market after three years, the Cherokee was first previewed during the launch of the Wrangler JL. For 2019, it gains a new look that aligns it to the premium side of the Jeep family. It gets a refreshed face incorporating a new lightweight aluminum hood, and new LED headlights. At the back, it gets a new lightweight composite tailgate with an integrated light bar with release handle.
Inside, it uses new high-gloss Piano Black and Satin Chrome accents along with a lighter toned cabin for a more pleasant and welcoming environment. The re-sculpted center console has been enlarged for additional storage and has both USB and power outlets.
Powering the 2019 Cherokee is the 2.4-liter MultiAir2 Tigershark 4-cylinder engine making 180 horsepower. For 2019, it incorporates changes that reduces NVH while boosting fuel efficiency by up to 7.5 percent. Mated to it is an upgraded TorqueFlite 9-speed automatic.
Underneath, it is underpinned by the modular Compact U.S. Wide (CUS-wide) platform. It has front MacPherson Struts and rear independent Multi-links offering up to 198 millimeters of suspension travel. The isolated rear cradle along with the low-alloy front suspension crossmember should also contribute to a quieter, smoother ride and better handling.
Meanwhile, the Compass is what Jeep calls its “Global Compact SUV” underpinned by FCA’s small wide 4x4 architecture. To that end, it combines a fuel-efficient powertrain with authentic Jeep design and superior off-road dynamics.
The exterior design is expressive and emotional with a wide stance and exceptional glass-to-wheel proportions. The all-new compact SUV is immediately recognizable as a Jeep with its distinctive traditional Jeep 7-slot grille.
Inside, the all-new Jeep Compass showcases a premium interior design highlighted by sculptural surface elements and precise technical detail. From the driver’s cockpit and center console to the seats and multiple storage solutions throughout the cabin, the interior is thoughtfully designed with characteristic Jeep design cues and accented with a color and finish that complements a lifestyle of adventure.
The Jeep Compass boasts a rigid foundation and features a premium, sculptural design aesthetic. The upper body structure and frame are engineered as a single unit for a stiff and more mass-efficient structure. It is designed and built with an extensive use of high-strength steel and liberal use of structural adhesives.
Planned for retail in August, variants, colors, and pricing will be revealed at a later date.

PIAA to Introduce Two Value-Oriented Products at MIAS
PIAA Philippines is introducing two new value-oriented products for the Manila International Auto Show (MIAS): the OTO Style Horn and the all-weather Hyper Arros LED light bulb. Designed with the sensibilities of developing markets in mind, these two products aim to boost PIAA’s presence in the premium mass market sector while also appealing to those who look for brand and style.
Translated as “Sound” in Japanese, the OTO Style Horn features the same PIAA quality and standards at a lower price point. It successfully complies with various ECE and JIS standards including:
- Temperature Test: sound remains the same at 80 degrees to -30 degrees Celsius
- Salt Spray Test: no corrosion despite being exposed to salt water
- Water Endurance Test: sound remains the same after water is sprayed from 360 degrees
- Endurance Test: sound remains the same at 100,000 times and at 500,000 times, sound should not have dropped more than 5 decibels.
This twin-pack horn (it’s sold as a set) features deep bass note, with a sound frequency of 400Hz + 500Hz and a maximum output of 112 dB. For MIAS, it will be on sale for around P 1,200 a set.
Another product designed with developing market sensibilities in mind is the Hyper Arros all-weather LED light bulb.
With a color temperature of 4000K, it produces a neutral white-colored beam mimicking the color generated by a standard halogen bulb, but with a higher output and less power consumption (20 watts for the H4). This makes it less straining on the eye, especially due to constant reflections, especially in bumper-to-bumper traffic. According to PIAA, it also does better in excessively dusty or heavy downpour compared to 6000K and 8000K bulbs. Another added bonus is that it improves the visibility of classic or vintage vehicles without changing the retro look or feel.
The Hyper Arros all-weather LED light bulb is available in a variety of sizes such as H4, HB3, HB4, HIR1, HIR2, H8, H9, H11, H16, and H7 and will be previewed at MIAS. It will be available for retail by the end of April at outlets that carry PIAA.
