How Suzuki's Yaramaika Spirit Led to Japan's First Front-Wheel Drive Car

This year marks Suzuki’s 100th anniversary with Michio Suzuki having first started in business in March 1920 with the manufacture of textile looms. These became more advanced and very popular right through to the early 1950s when there was a global decline in the cotton industry.

Surprisingly, initial development of Suzuki’s first car began as far back as 1937, although this had to be shelved later with the outbreak of the second World War. Research and development finally resumed in 1954 when Suzuki Motor Co Limited was formed.

Using Suzuki’s “Yaramaika” spirit, (translated as “Let’s do it”) which was deep in the root of the Enshu region where Suzuki originated together with his determination to drive forward, Michio quickly began researching vehicles produced overseas and gained a wealth of knowledge to build the first Suzuki car, known as the Suzulight.

The Suzulight was a compact vehicle weighing just over 500 kilograms and powered by a 360-cc, 15 horsepower two-cylinder, two-stroke engine—the first of its type to ever be fitted to a car. It was also the first car in Japan to feature a front-engine, front-wheel drive layout.

The Suzulight easily met the Japanese “Keijidosha” or Kei light car legislation and Suzuki and his team quickly began their first development road testing of it.

As a prototype, its most memorable early drive was a 300-kilometer trip across the Hakone mountainous region between Hamamatsu and Tokyo which proved challenging on roads that had not yet been paved. Although arriving very late in the evening, the team arrived to present the car to the President of Yanase Auto Japan’s leading authority on Automobiles.

The President had stayed on late to greet the team and made his way out to thoroughly test the car. Several hours later he returned very impressed and immediately gave Suzuki full approval to put the Suzulight into production. It was way ahead of its time with independent coil spring suspension and rack and pinion steering.

Production commenced in October 1955 with initial production of 3-4 cars per month but by early 1956 monthly volume had climbed to 30 units.

In 1959, design changed with the development of the Suzulight TL model and popularity of Suzuki cars quickly grew. The TL gained high acclaim thanks to its superior interior and storage space within its very compact size. The engine remained as a two-stroke, air cooled 360cc unit but with an increase in power to 21 horsepower.

Suzuki experienced a rapid rise in production of mini vehicles thanks to the TL. In December 1959, just three months after its launch it had already reached the monthly production goal of 200 units which climbed very sharply in 1960 to a total of 5,824 units.

65 years since delivery of its first car, Suzuki remains globally renowned as the “small car experts” and produces three million units per year. Michio Suzuki’s original strategy of the design and production of lightweight vehicles lives on with the HEARTECT platform which underpins most of its line-up from the S-Presso all the way to the 7-seater XL7.

Suzuki Auto PH to Begin Home Delivery of New Vehicles

After almost a month-long halt in dealership operations, Suzuki Philippines Inc. (SPH) has finally re-opened some of its auto stores. And to take precautionary measures that will avoid the spread of COVID-19 among its employees and customers, SPH made sure to set forth Dealership Reopening Guidelines.

The auto company takes into consideration the safety of its employees and customers, and with that introduced “New Normal” business operation guidelines with the easy to remember: S.M.A.R.T.:
  • Sanitize Thoroughly
  • Maintain Safe Distancing
  • Adhere Strictly
  • Reach People Online
  • Think Positive.
Those who are looking to visit Suzuki dealerships are expected to follow these guidelines.

Suzuki Auto PH has gone a step further though, and asked their dealerships to adjust the layout with less vehicles on display to keep the showroom from getting too crowded. Moreover, they’re now encouraging customers to reach through their respective dealerships online presence, where things such as test drive requests, appointment bookings, and even loan applications can be done without visiting the dealership. Finally, customers can now opt to have their new full-sanitized Suzuki vehicle home delivered. If they still choose to pick their vehicle up, they are encouraged to come alone for the handover ceremony.

Exercising these guidelines is a leap towards prevention against COVID-19, but aside from a physical course of action, SPH understands that thinking positively is equally essential. Suzuki Philippines urges the community to distance ourselves from negativity, stay healthy and exercise regularly, and foster positive energy amid these challenging times.

Suzuki PH is the Undisputed "Underbone King."

Known as a manufacturer of motorcycles, automobiles, and outboard motors, Suzuki Motors is celebrating its 100th anniversary this year, but little do you know that Suzuki Philippines is also celebrating its own milestone this year.

Suzuki started out making loom machines in 1902, 22 years earlier than another loom machine turned automaker—Toyota. Founded as Suzuki Loom Works in 1902 in Hamamatsu, Shizuoka Prefecture in Japan by innovator and inventor Michio Suzuki, it moved to making motorcycles in 1954. In 1955, they made Japan’s first automobile—the Suzulight.

But as the fourth largest Japanese automotive brand celebrates its 100th anniversary, Suzuki Philippines is also celebrating its 35th year in the country. It holds the distinction of being the only integrated company that carries motorcycles, automobile, and outboard motor Suzuki products in Asia.

With 68 dealership groups and a network of 3,079 shops, Suzuki Motorcycle has successfully dominated the underbone market with the Smash and Raider. Selling 196,116 units last year, the Smash is touted as the number one selling underbone in the Leisure category. Meanwhile, the Raider R150 is acknowledged as the “Underbone King” for being the highest selling model in the Underbone Sport category with 144,141 units sold. Both models have sold more than double their competitors over the years.

Meanwhile, solidifying its presence in the automotive segment with a 21.17 percent increase in 2019, Suzuki Automobile has steadily captured market share. Jumping three places to now becoming fifth in the Philippine market, the boost in sales was the realization of the company’s aggressive efforts throughout 2019, leading to top models Ertiga, Vitara, and Celerio becoming some of the market’s most enjoyed vehicles of the year.

The newest addition to Suzuki Philippines is the Outboard Motor or Marine business. With 6 dealerships, it has achieved 205 percent sales growth in 2019. Through aggressive sales and after sales efforts, they’ve managed to turn heads in the business.

Suzuki and Kia are Offering Extended Warranty, PMS Coverage

Suzuki and Kia have now joined other carmakers in offering extended warranty coverage and preventive maintenance service grace period in light of the COVID-19 pandemic gripping the Philippines.

In accordance with the Philippine government direction to mitigate COVID-19, Suzuki Philippines has ordered all its dealerships—automobile, motorcycle, and marine products to suspend its operations under further notice.

In light of that decision, the Japanese carmaker is extending warranties expiring during the period of Enhanced Community Quarantine by three months granted that owners follow the Suzuki standard warranty policy. This covers motorcycle, automobile, and marine product customers. For units due for PMS during the quarantine period, Suzuki Philippines is likewise granting a special servicing extension of three months.

Meanwhile, Kia’s new distributor, Ayala Automotive is offering a 30-day extension after the lifting of the Enhanced Community Quarantine for expiring warranties, while PMS grace periods are extended by 15 days.

Happy 100th Birthday, Suzuki Motor!

This year, another Japanese automaker is celebrating its 100th anniversary: Suzuki. It was on March 15, 1920 that Suzuki Loom Manufacturing Company was founded by Michio Suzuki. Since then, Suzuki has expanded its business from looms to motorcycles, automobiles, outboard motors, and ATVs, always adapting to the trend of the times as well as domestic and global markets.

After changing its name to Suzuki Motor Co. Ltd in 1954, Suzuki launched the Suzulight, the first mass-produced mini vehicle in Japan. The company name was then changed to, “Suzuki Motor Corporation” in 1990 in view of its business expansion and globalization. The journey of 100 years was never easy, to overcome a number of crises since the foundation, although every member of Suzuki united as one and continued to make the company thrive.

Suzuki has grown to a company with many fans across the globe and even today, its unchanging spirit of manufacturing has been passed on. Marking the beginning of the next century this year, every member of Suzuki is committed to achieve an even greater business.

“All members of Suzuki Motor Corporation take this as an important milestone to reaffirm the founder’s philosophy of ‘focusing on customers’ and strive to deliver products to our customers across the globe. Your kind support is truly the greatest factor that has enabled us to always be close to our customers’ daily lives and achieve our commemorative 100th anniversary. We sincerely appreciate your continuous support,” says Director and Chairman Osamu Suzuki, and Director and President Toshihiro Suzuki.

Stricter Emissions Puts Doubts on Suzuki Jimny's Future

The diminutive Suzuki Jimny may soon fall victim to Europe’s increasingly stringent emissions requirements. The carmaker confirmed that the mini-4x4 will be sold only in very limited numbers this year due to the new mandatory emissions reduction targets set to take effect from 2020 onwards.

From 2021, each carmaker in Europe must have a fleet average of just 95 grams of CO2 per kilometer, and any carmaker that exceeds this limit will be levied with huge fines. In its current form, the K15B-equipped Jimny emits 154 grams per kilometer of CO2 with the 5-speed manual, and 170 grams per kilometer of CO2 with the 4-speed automatic.

And while the solution to meet this emissions target is to develop mild hybrid systems (Suzuki will be doing this with the Swift, Vitara, and S-Cross models), the Jimny isn’t available with this kind of technology.

According to a statement by Suzuki Europe, they are committed to ensure delivery to customers who have already placed an order. After that though, its fate beyond 2021 is in question.

One report suggests that the Japanese automaker may convert the Jimny into a commercial vehicle which is exempted from the strict emissions target. In order to do this, Suzuki may have to delete the rear seats and make minor interior tweaks. It may then return to Europe in 2022 with a new engine or get hybrid power to meet Europe’s emissions requirements.

With the Jimny such in short supply in the Philippines, here’s an even better suggestion to Suzuki: just divert stocks destined for Europe and send them over here! Off-road enthusiasts sure want to get their hands on this cutesy 4x4.
