Ford PH to Add New Sport Variant to Everest Line-Up This Month

After the re-introduction of the Trend variant, Ford Philippines is set to add yet another variant to the Everest family this 2020: the Everest Sport. Arriving in two weeks’ time, the Everest Sport is expected to become the top-grade 4x2 trim in Ford’s mid-sized SUV line-up.

Expected to pick up where the Titanium 4x2 leaves off, the Everest Sport will get a more menacing-looking exterior package, if the Thailand market version is any indication. It will replace all the chrome with high-gloss black ones. Additionally, the trademark three-bar grille will be replaced by a mesh-type one, and the hood with get embossed lettering that spells out, “Everest.” Capping off the changes are 20-inch high-gloss black alloy rims fitted with 265/50 tires and the usual door and trunk badging.

Inside, the Everest Sport is expected to receive a similarly sporty theme. The leather seats and dash topper with feature “Raceway Blue” contrasting stitching, while the seats will have the words, “Sport” embossed on it. And like the Titanium 4x2, the Everest Sport is expected to feature the SYNC 3 infotainment system with Apple CarPlay and Android Auto support, an 8-way power adjustable driver’s seat, and a power-folding third row among a long list of standard features.

Given its positioning as a top-trim 4x2 variant, the Everest Sport will likely share the Titanium 4x2’s 2.0-liter single-turbo diesel engine. This will give it 180 horsepower and 420 Nm of torque. The sole transmission will be a 10-speed automatic with cruise control.

Along with the introduction of the Everest Sport, Ford Philippines is also expected to refresh the Everest Titanium line-up to give it technologies first seen in the 2020 Ranger. These include new LED headlights that offer 17 percent better lighting penetration (20 percent on the high beam), as well as a windshield-mounted USB port for dash cams. If Ford opts to copy the Ranger’s playbook, expect these changes not to cost a single cent.

And on the subject of the price, Ford hasn’t revealed any details yet. However, it can be inferred based how the Everest line-up is currently positioned. Currently, the Everest Titanium 4x4 tops out at P 2,299,000 while the Everest Titanium 4x2 is at P 1,995,000. This leaves a P 304,000 gap which Ford Philippines can easily plug the Everest Sport into. Our hunch is that Ford will price it at around P 2,080,000. Did we get it right? Let’s see in two weeks.

Review: 2020 Ford Everest 2.0L Bi-Turbo Titanium 4WD

By and large, the Ford Everest re-wrote the mid-sized SUV rules. It didn’t become the segment’s best-seller, but it was, the best balanced of the lot. Not only did it offer looks, but it also offered performance, capability, comfort, and refinement in equal measure. That’s why it comes as a surprise that despite facing some stiff competition, Ford has opted to keep things well enough alone. Are they confident in having developed a “future-proof” SUV some five years back, or is this a case of them running out of fresh new ideas?

If looks were the only criteria, it sure looks like Ford’s nailed it. Despite new competitors coming out, they’ve yet to hold a candle to the Everest’s styling. Ford’s done the right thing in giving its mid-sized SUV an understated, yet elegant look the first time around. Doing away with angry, exaggerated lines or taillights that look like bloody teardrops, it’s managed to withstand the test of time. Truth be told, park one next to its contemporary rivals, and no one will be able to tell that the design’s four years old. Of course, that’s not to say everything completely the same. The grille is new, and so is the design for the 20-inch wheels.

As with any pickup-based SUV, getting into the Everest requires a bit of an effort despite the pillar-mounted grab handles. Suffice to say, it’s not going to be the best choice for families who regularly ferry geriatrics or small children. Once aboard though, it does have a with a nice, airy feel. Don’t mistake it for a luxury SUV though; after all, it’s still based off the Ranger. Poke around long enough and the hard-wearing, but low-rent plastics are there. Nonetheless, it’s been dolled up with padding on the dashboard, higher quality leather appointments, and programmable ambient lighting. Oh, and at least the monotone all-black cabin (Ford calls it, “Ebony”) makes everything look better.

In the first or second rows, there’s no denying that the Everest offers a feeling of space. Plus, the seats themselves are good. They’re supportive and with power adjustment for those in the front, finding a comfortable seating position is easy (sadly, the driving position feels compromised due to the lack of a telescopic steering column). It’s largely the same in the second row where the seats are well-shaped and capable of seating three abreast. It’s only in the third row where things get cozier. Getting in and out is a challenge because the second row only slides (it doesn’t tumble). Once you squeeze through though, you’re greeted with enough space. And with the second-row seats offering some slide adjustment, those in the rearmost row can, at least, bargain for more knee room.

Ford has always used tech as one of the Everest’s selling points and for 2020 shows their continued leadership in that department. Aside from SYNC 3 (now with Apple CarPlay, Android Auto, and offline GPS navigation), this range-topping Titanium 4WD finally gets a push-button engine start/stop and passive keyless entry. It’s hard to imagine, but prior to this year, Ford’s SUV never had this feature. Anyhow, it also gets automatic high beam assist, a 10-speaker sound system with Active Noise Cancellation, a dual panel moonroof, power folding third row, and a hands-free power tailgate. It’s definitely everything, but the kitchen sink in here.

Coupled with its myriad of convenience features, the Everest now adds a plethora of driver assist features too. Its trick Active Park Assist which automatically steers this 4.9-meter long, 1.9-meter wide SUV into parallel slots is still present, but so is lane keeping assist, blind spot indicators with cross traffic alert, and tire pressure monitoring system. Now, add adaptive cruise control and automatic emergency braking this time, and you have the most complete SUV, safety-wise.

Now, while its looks and kit match luxury SUVs, the Everest still can’t match them in terms of driving performance or refinement. Still, among its peers in the pickup-based SUV segment, it’s still top of its class. Compared to all others, it manages to absorb road undulations with most lumps and bumps soaked up with surprising delicacy. Supposedly new this year are retuned shocks, and they make their presence felt over really rough surfaces. Whereas the ride would shake and shudder through them before, this one feels much more pliant. Through the bends, it’s surprisingly well-composed with a chassis that’s predictable and controllable. And with a Watt’s Linkage packed into the rear coil spring suspension, body pitching is controlled, aiding high-speed stability. The steering itself is offputtingly light, but once adjusted for, is accurate enough to keep this two-ton vehicle in check.

Of course, there’s only so much the Everest can do to resist the laws of physics. Push it hard through a tight corner, and it feels unwieldy; its body-on-frame chassis and non-independent rear end simply no match for a car-based crossover. In addition, though its bulk is well-disguised on the open road, it’s a bit more intimidating to drive in bumper-to-bumper traffic. The high-set cabin coupled with the thick A-pillars equate to blind spots especially from the front and the front three quarters. It’s especially troublesome to maneuver next to low-slung sports cars and motorcycles. The proximity sensors could have helped, but they’re either delayed or give out too many false alarms to be of any use. Even the front pre-collision alert are too sensitive for Manila roads causing too many panic stops which are exacerbated by the spongy brakes.

Now, while the Everest looks almost aesthetically unchanged from before, the biggest change happens under the hood. Gone is the 3.2-liter inline-5 and in its place is a twin-turbo 2.0-liter 4-cylinder engine. The downsized powerplant may draw errs from those who prefer larger displacement engines, but in reality, it’s still a solid performer.

Without a doubt, the biggest improvement in this bi-turbo engine is that it’s quieter and smoother than the old 3.2-liter unit. Some of the credit probably goes to the Everest’s fancy noise-canceling tech, but roll down the windows, and it still sounds less truck-like than it ever did. Oh, and service intervals have been reduced too to just once a year. Peak torque comes in early and because of that, overcomes the 2,466-kilogram curb weight easily. However, it loses shove quickly after that making it feel not as powerful as its 213 horsepower, 500 Nm of torque outputs suggest.

Mated to this bi-turbo powerplant is a 10-speed automatic. Upshifts are imperceptible, but downshifts can sometimes be aggressive. On some occasions, it relies on engine braking whenever the throttle’s let go, resulting in a slightly perturbed feeling. Unlike its application in the Ranger, there’s a manual override here, but oddly enough, it’s placed as a rocker switch on the gear lever—a sign perhaps from Ford engineers to leave the thing alone. Still, for what it’s worth, tapping it reveals a “hidden” function that display which gear is being used. Unfortunately, for all Ford’s work, fuel economy hasn’t improved significantly: 7.69 km/L in heavy and 9.17 km/L in light traffic. For those keeping score, the old Everest does 7.46 km/L.

Four years on, and the Ford Everest may not be pushing the goal post as far as it once did. Yet, after all’s said and done, it remains the best balanced among them all. Sure, there are new or more affordable choices out there now, but as a technical showcase, this SUV is still the tour-de-force. It’s by no means perfect, but it’s still the best thought of and best realized mid-sized SUV. No other offering in this genre offers a commendable mix of performance, capability, refinement, and tech as the Everest.

Ford Ranger Sales Reach a Quarterly Record

Despite increased competition, Ford managed to fortify its position in the pickup truck market with the announcement that the Ranger achieved an all-time record quarterly sales performance in the third quarter of 2019.

Third quarter retail sales for the Ranger rose 28 percent to a record 3,852 vehicles, driving its year-to-date total up 26 percent to 10,688 vehicles.

“The Ranger remains a key driver of our growth in the Philippines and continues to gain a wide appeal among customers with varying needs. We remain confident that the segment-defining pickup truck will help sustain our momentum as we close out the year,” said PK Umashankar, managing director, Ford Philippines.

The ‘Built Ford Tough’ Ranger lineup in the Philippines has grown to 11 variants, including the recent addition of the Ranger XLS Sport that features striking design enhancements from the XLS variant that further strengthen its rugged and visual appeal. The Ford Ranger is available starting at P 1,032,000.

Third quarter sales for the Everest mid-size SUV totaled 618 units, pushing up year-to-date sales to 3,537 vehicles, while the EcoSport mini-SUV delivered third quarter sales of 492 units, driving its year-to-date sales to 1,512 vehicles.

Ford Philippines credits the strong sales performance of the Ranger and Everest thanks to its next-generation 2.0-liter diesel engine and 10-speed automatic. With the new powertrain, customers enjoy lower maintenance costs thanks to a once-a-year scheduled service interval.

The 2020 Ford Everest is Finally in the Philippines (/w Specs)

More than 65,000 units sold and three generations later, Ford Philippines launches the new and refreshed version if its best-selling Everest. Available in two variants, it’s now available at all authorized Ford dealerships with a starting price of P 1.995 million.

“The Ford Everest was launched in the Philippine market in 2003, at a time when the demand for SUVs was still on the rise. The Everest redefined the SUV segment with its bold design, advanced technology, and stunning off-road and on-road capabilities,” said PK “Uma” Umashankar, managing director, Ford Philippines.

For the 2020 model year, the Everest packs notable enhancements to its engine, transmission, driver-assist technologies, and convenience features.

At the heart is Ford’s next-generation 2.0-liter turbo diesel engine. Shared with the Ranger Wildtrak and Ranger Raptor, the top-of-the-line Everest Titanium+ 4x4 AT gets a bi-turbo engine packing 213 horsepower and 500 Nm of torque. Meanwhile, the Everest Titanium 4x2 AT gets a single-turbo version with 180 horsepower and 420 Nm of torque. Both engines are mated to a 10-speed automatic promising not just improved refinement, but fuel efficiency and acceleration as well. Cruise control is standard. The Everest Titanium+ 4x4 AT also benefits from 4WD Terrain Management System that maximizes its surefootedness regardless of terrain, ensuring full capability on- and off-road.

Along with the new engine, the 2020 Everest now has smart keyless entry and push-button start/stop across the line-up as well as a hands-free power tailgate that can open and close the hatch with a simple kicking motion of the foot under the rear bumper. On the top-trim Everest Titanium+ 4x4, it receives Active Park Assist that automatically steers the vehicle into a parking space and a panoramic sunroof.

As always, Ford’s SYNC 3 voice-activated infotainment system is standard. Featuring an 8.0-inch touchscreen, it features built-in navigation as well as compatibility with both Apple CarPlay and Android Auto.

For safety, the 2020 Everest comes standard with 7 SRS airbags, ABS with EBD, front and rear parking sensors with reverse camera, electronic stability control, and blind spot information system. The Everest Titanium+ 4x4 AT adds even more in the form of automatic high beam control, hill descent control, lane keeping system, adaptive cruise control, and pre-collision assist with pedestrian detection.

Along with the new drivetrain, added driver-assist technologies, and convenience features, the 2020 Everest also benefits from a slight refresh thanks to a new grille, new 20-inch split-spoke alloy wheels, and a pure black (ebony) interior color.

Finally, in the best bit of news, the refreshed 2020 Everest benefits from lower service maintenance cost with a once a year scheduled service (or every 10,000 kilometers, whichever comes first) instead of current scheme of twice a year.

The new Ford Everest is available in six colors: Absolute Black, Aluminum Metallic, Artic White, Meteor Gray, Sunset Red, and a new shade, Diffused Silver. It comes in two variants, the Everest Titanium 4x2 AT that retails for P 1,995,000, and the Everest Titanium+ 4x4 AT that goes for P 2,299,000.

The Refreshed 2019 Ford Everest is Arriving First Week August

Mark your calendars: the refreshed Ford Everest is finally dropping in on the first week of August. After a false alarm last December and a lengthy delay heading to the market, the Philippines will finally receive the updated form of Ford’s 7-seater SUV.

We have already covered the Thailand version of the refreshed 2019 Everest, so you can read it here. But to recap:
  • It will likely get the bi-turbo 2.0-liter diesel engine also found in the Ranger Wildtrak and Ranger Raptor. In this guise, it makes 213 horsepower and 500 Nm of torque.
  • Lower-end variants will use the single-turbo version of the engine with 180 horsepower and 420 Nm of torque.
  • The transmission will be a 10-speed automatic.
  • Based on the single teaser photo sent by Ford Philippines, Diffused Gold Silver Metallic, a new shade will be on offer.
  • Aside from a new color, the 2019 Everest will be differentiated by a new grille, refreshed front bumper, and new alloy wheel designs.
  • Higher-trim models will also gain LED headlights (replacing the current HIDs).
  • Inside, it remains more or less the same except for the addition of a gear shift-mounted manual override, one-touch power windows for all passengers, a smart key with push-button start/stop, and a foot-activated hands-free tailgate.
  • It will also get Autonomous Emergency Braking or AEB. This is an upgrade from the Forward Collision Warning which will only warn the driver of an impending collision. AEB will use its radar and monocular front camera to automatically apply the brakes if the driver does not intervene.
  • Other safety features include 7 airbags, ABS with EBD, Rollover Mitigation, Auto High Beam Control, Driver Alert System, Tire Pressure Monitoring, Front and Rear Parking Sensors with rear camera, Blind Spot Information System, and Active Park Assist.
  • No pricing has been announced yet, but expect a hike of P 50,000 based on its pricing in Thailand.

The French Just Transformed the Ranger and Everest to Military Vehicles

You want to know how tough the Ford Ranger and Everest are? Apparently, they’re so capable they can be converted for military use. French defense company Arquus, which specializes in armored vehicles transformed Ford’s venerable pickup and SUV into the Trigger and Trapper, respectively.

The Ranger-based Trigger is a “light tactical vehicle” that’s used for troop transport and logistics. It can be used as a land patroller and to fulfill security missions. Arquus points out that its 1.3-metric ton payload capacity and 4.6 square-meters of cargo room make it the biggest in its class.

It keeps the Ranger’s 800-mm water wading depth while also being capable of climbing 60 percent grades, 40 percent slope, and go over vertical obstacles of 230 mm. With a 2.2-liter 4-cylinder engine, it tops out at 170 km/h, and a cruising range of 1,000 kilometers.

Meanwhile, the Everest-based Trapper is a 5-seater personnel carrier that’s actually been chosen as the French Army’s liaison vehicle. It’s outfitted with extended ground clearance, reinforced bumpers, and special off-road grip tires. It even has all the equipment and radio equipment needed to fulfill “all its missions.”

The Trapper has a 160-horsepower engine with a 142 km/h top speed, a maximum payload of one ton, and a cruising range of 900 kilometers. It can climb a 50 percent gradient, traverse slopes of 30 percent, vertical obstacles of 250 mm, and water wading of 500 mm.
