Hyundai has revealed its smallest crossover to date: the 2020 Venue. Designed for those seeking a seamless combination of style and versatility, it does so without breaking the bank because it’s now the most affordable SUV in the Korean carmaker’s lineup.
The design of the Venue is small, but confident. It’s 129 millimeters shorter and 30 millimeters narrower than the Kona. Yet, it delivers a new interpretation of Hyundai’s signature design language. It showcases a solid and full volume wheel arch and strong character line, while the front cascading grille includes the new Hyundai signature face that’s found on both Kona including composite LED lights and cube shape headlamps.
Inside, it’s a back-to-basics approach with a direct focus on space and utility. Compared to the Kona, the Venue doesn’t give up much in terms of interior volume: total space is just down 76 liters (62 liters for the passenger area) compared to its bigger brother. Aside from a 60/40 split-folding rear seat, it features a rear covering shelf for added privacy and can be conveniently stowed along the rear seatback when not being used. Convenience features include dual USB ports, a 3.5-inh TFT instrument cluster, a rear-view camera, leather wrapped steering wheel, and Bluetooth hands-free.
Under the hood is Hyundai’s new Smartstream Gamma 1.6-liter 4-cylinder engine. The 121-horsepower engine features Dual Port Fuel Injection (DPFI) and can be mated to either a 6-speed manual or Intelligent Variable Transmission (IVT) automatic.
The IVT is basically a CVT gearbox with a proprietary shift control strategy that enhances shift response by matching a gear ratio with engine operating conditions resulting in a number of benefits such as smoother engine operation and improved fuel efficiency.
Hyundai’s first and internally developed proprietary IVT offers a shift control strategy which enhances shift response through a continuous range of effective gear ratios. The ability to match a gear ratio with engine operating conditions provides a number of benefits including smooth transition of engine operating speeds and improved fuel efficiency.
The 2020 Hyundai Venue will be produced in Ulsan, South Korea and will arrive at U.S. dealerships by the fourth quarter of this year. Given the strong market reception towards the Kona, Hyundai Asia Resources, Inc., may opt to bring in the Venue to compete in the B-segment crossover against the likes of the Ford EcoSport, Nissan Juke, and probably the upcoming Volkswagen T-Cross.
