Geely PH to Offer N95-Certified Cabin Air Filters to All Coolray Owners

In line with Geely’s commitment to offer N95-certified cabin air filters on its Azkarra compact SUV, and MY2020 Coolray crossovers as standard, Philippine distributor, Sojitz G Auto Philippines (SGAP) has good news for existing Coolray owners: they’ll also get the same N95-certified cabin air filters for free.

Done in cooperation with Geely Global, the announcement was done coinciding with the re-opening of Geely Philippines’s sole showroom on North EDSA starting tomorrow. The cabin air filter replacement for existing Coolray owners is simple and the replacement process takes less than one hour.

The Geely CN95 high-efficiency filter, blocks at least 95 percent of particles and droplets measuring 0.3 microns in diameter—equivalent to wearing an N95 mask. And while viruses are much smaller (0.06 to 0.14 microns), because it’s carried by droplets, the filter can pretty much catch them. The filter also has antibacterial properties—removing 95 percent of E.coli and 99 percent of staphylococcus aureus. It can also absorb smoky smells, odor, and even resist 90 percent of allergens including pollen and dust mites.

The filter will require periodic replacement, and will be done every 15,000 kilometers to coincide with the Coolray’s 7,500-kilometer PMS interval.

How a Global Design Team Resulted in the Geely Coolray Becoming a World-Class Car

To create a world-class car, you need a team that knows the world. With the Coolray, the result is a global collaboration between teams of designers and engineers.

With studios in Shanghai, Sweden, California, Malaysia, and the United Kingdom, Geely Design alone has nearly 1,000 designers and support staff spread over the globe. “Our design studio is like the United Nations – we have over 21 nationalities, and on a daily basis at our Shanghai studio, I hear Malay, Chinese, Swedish, French, German, and of course English conversations,” says Guy Burgoyne, Head of Geely Design China.

From such a global pool of talent emerges a car that embodies and symbolizes the energy and charisma of its target audience: globally-orientated youth and young families. “They appreciate design; they want design to be a focal point of their daily lives, and they want the car they drive to be an extension of their personality. What they don’t want, but what they’ve had to settle for so far, are bland, uninspired blobs on wheels with nondescript grey or black interiors”, says Jamie Barrett, Lead Exterior Designer for the Coolray.

The Coolray’s personality exudes fun and confidence, yet at the same time is exciting and mature; it balances performance with safety. All these facets are embodied in the exterior design. Although clearly part of the family, the Coolray has its own personality and will not be mistaken for another family member. “We aim for our cars to have different themes based on a core style,” says Jamie.

Take Geely’s iconic Cosmos Grille for example – on the Coolray the rings are wider and deeper, and create a wide mask containing the grille and lights. Meanwhile, the lower bumpers have been sculpted to pass air around the car thereby improving fuel economy. “The front is sculpted to have bold volumes that give off a strong 3D effect. The hood features a strong power bulge that narrows towards the front, focusing in on the Geely badge. The surfaces and curves feel rich and premium to give off a quality feel,” Jamie explains.

The satin chrome wing leads the eye over the car’s powerful front haunches expanding into the side profile before rising into the D-pillar. Boosting the Coolray’s sporting credentials are the carbon fiber elements on the front and rear bumpers, along with the rims, which together give the car its sporty stance and fun road presence.

The low-slung silhouette and speeding hood have been built to give the car its presence. Many of the elements of the design are inspired by the world of aviation. Where the roof shoots down at the rear it appears to be suspended over the D-pillar.

“This is inspired by aircraft wing stabilizers, to simulate cutting through the air with precision and create a floating sensation,” says Jamie. The aero-inspired spoiler and jet thruster-like twin exhausts build on this theme and help give the Coolray its playful, sporty feeling.

Inside, the aviation theme continues right down to the two side air vents, again inspired by jet engines. As Mei Song, Interior Designer of the Coolray mention, “The layout of the driving area adopts the design style of a cockpit, expressed in a lighter and more dynamic way, bringing sheer driving pleasure to the driver.”

The first thing many people will notice is the 10.25-inch floating control panel, which gives a vibrant feeling to the interior. However, countless more design nuances contribute to the car’s interior experience. Mei Song continues, “The expansive cabin space was created using seamless layered architecture. For example, the horizontal theme extends from the instrument panel all the way to the door panel, making the visual look wider.”

The visual cues and details add to the overall aesthetics. During the daytime, decorative dashboard panels display an orbiting planet-inspired pattern. As night rolls around, this switches to an echoing pattern which features a resemblance to the expanding front Cosmos Grille.

Adding to the sporting vibe is the red dashboard and accenting on the seats and door inserts. This, however, is not any old red – much thought has been put into the hue and its effect on the driver. “The red color used in the interior is optimized with the right levels of saturation and hue, just like the color of a vintage red wine. This gives an overall stylish and stimulating look and feel while avoiding the usual visual fatigue caused by bright red that can also affect driving safety,” says Mei Song.

Rounding out the fighter plane like cockpit is the ergonomic jet throttle-inspired shifter. Just like in a real fighter jet, this sends commands rapidly down a wire to the 7-speed dual clutch unit rather than by a mechanical connection.

Geely Philippines Says All 3 Variants of Coolray SUVs Are Now Readily Available

Since Geely’s brand launch, most of the attention went straight for the top-of-the-line P 1.198-million Coolray 1.5 Sport; it’s totally legit too with its high value for money quotient, and myriad of standard comfort and luxury features. But now, Sojitz G Auto Philippines (SGAP) wants to focus your attention on two other Coolray variants—the P 978k Comfort and the P 1.088-million Premium.

With stocks arriving just before the end of 2019, SGAP will be greeting 2020 with three variants of its Coolray compact SUV.

Like all other Coolray variants, the Comfort comes packing the same 177-horsepower, 255 Nm of torque 1.5-liter 3-cylinder engine mated to a 7-speed wet-type dual clutch transmission. It also comes with a push-start button and remote start feature. But to keep its price to P 978,000, it makes do with 17-inch alloy rims, fabric seats, projector-type halogen headlights, and halogen front fog lights.

Moving up to the P 1,088,000 Premium model and you get a treat. It doesn’t look that much different from the Sport variant—getting 18-inch wheels, quad tail pipes, and even the panoramic sunroof as standard in the process. In fact, the only changes are the PVC seats (the Sport has leather) and halogen headlights/fog lights (the Sport has full LEDs).

With all three variants now readily available, SGAP says there’s a Coolray that fits a customer’s lifestyle and budget.

Geely Philippines Garners Over 50 Coolray Reservations, Opens First Showroom

The day after its official brand launch in the country, Sojitz G Auto Philippines, the distributor of Geely vehicles opened its first showroom located in the heart of Quezon City.

Located at 75 Corregidor Street EDSA, Quezon City, the 1,160 square-meter showroom can display up to 20 vehicles inside, while a 2,600-square meter space is dedicated for aftersales service. This is notable because it’s considered one of the largest service centers for Geely globally.

Apart from the Coolray sub-compact SUV, the North EDSA showroom also showcases the latest technology from Geely including the Coolray Plug-In Hybrid Electric Vehicle (PHEV) and the Geely Atlas compact SUV.

Before its showroom opening, Geely started pre-selling the Coolray through a mall road show. The pre-selling campaign which had stops at U.P. Town and Trinoma in Quezon City and Uptown Mall in BGC garnered more than 50 Coolray reservations. Some of these units were officially turned over to their owners as part of the showroom inauguration ceremonies.

Geely Comes Back with 2020 Coolray SUV. Prices Start at P 978,000 (w/ Specs)

Last July, Sojitz G Auto Philippines (SGAP) was officially appointed as the importer and distributor of Geely cars in the Philippines. The company is the newest member of the Sojitz Corporation family which has been in the automotive business locally since the 1960’s.

Today, two months after SGAP’s appointment, they are launching their very first vehicle offering: the 2020 Geely Coolray sub-compact SUV.

Promising to bring the fun back in driving, the Geely Coolray comes with turbocharged power as standard. Also equipped with direct injection and dual variable valve timing, the 1.5-liter 3-cylinder motor generates a healthy 177 horsepower and 255 Nm of torque. Paired with a wet-type 7-speed dual clutch automatic, 0-100 km/h is achieved in just 7.9 seconds. Cruise control is standard.

As the parent company of Volvo Cars, Geely used the Swedish premium automaker’s expertise to develop the BMA or B-segment Modular Architecture. With a team of about 100 individuals from 20 countries working together, the BMA allows the Coolray, and in turn, upcoming Geely models to exceed the criteria of a five-star Euro NCAP safety rating. Apart from using the BMA platform, Geely is upping the safety game with standard ABS with EBD, traction control, stability control, and hill descent control on all variants.

Targeted towards millennials and young buyers, the Coolray uses lines and angles to distinguish itself from other small SUVs n the market. Based on the concept of “Racing through Space and Time,” it is confident, athletic, and bold. Seventeen-inch wheels are standard on the base Comfort model, while moving to the mid-tier Premium and top-tier Sport variants ups it to 18 inches. The Sport model also has a black roof fitted with a panoramic sunroof and various carbon fiber accents.

Inside, the Coolray uses a 7-inch LED display panel embedded in its instrument cluster that switches layout based on the selected driving mode—Normal, Eco, and Sport. For its infotainment system, it uses a 10.25-inch multimedia touch screen with QD Link Android connectivity. The Sport trim adds the G-Pilot system which includes Auto Park Assist that slots the car into parallel and perpendicular parking spots with the touch of a button, Blind Spot Detection, and even a 360-degree parking camera. Other features on the Sport include tire pressure monitoring system and a remote start feature.

The Geely Coolray is available in three variants with the following suggested retail prices: Comfort 1.5 A/T (P 978,000), 1.5 Premium A/T (P 1,088,000), and the 1.5 Sport A/T (P 1,198,000). The first-ever dealership is located along EDSA corner Corregidor Street in Quezon City.

Could Geely Shake Up the Local Automotive Industry?

Geely is making a comeback, and this time they’ll have backing from an unlikely source: Sojitz Corporation. Sojitz is a “sogo shosha” or a general trading company, and this means they’re involved in the buying, selling, importing, and exporting of various goods including automobiles. Now, a Japanese trading company importing Chinese cars is an odd combination in itself, but it must not be forgotten, Sojitz used to own 49 percent of Mitsubishi Motors Philippines before divesting their stake in June of last year.

Their time in the local automotive scene though was far from over. Since then, Sojitz has been extremely busy, establishing the exclusive importation and distributorship for the Mitsubishi-Fuso truck brand in November and now, through a new wholly-owned subsidiary, Sojitz G Auto Philippines Corporation (SGAP), they’re going to bring in Geely cars, MPVs, and SUVs.

As a brand, not much is known about Geely, except for its short-lived existence here under the CATS Motors group (we even got to test the Geely LC aka Panda). Internationally though, Geely has made waves snapping up brands such as Proton (49.9 percent owned), Lotus (51 percent owned), and Volvo (99 percent owned).

A privately-owned automotive group headquartered in Hangzhou, Zhejiang, the Chinese brand has embarked on several milestones which they’ve dubbed as “Eras.” Today, at Era 3.0, the company discontinued all of their other Mainland brands such as Emgrand, and consolidated everything under Geely. Starting in 2014, they have one focus in mind: “making refined cars for everyone.”

One of the products in the Era 3.0 is the Geely Binyue (literally translated as, “More Fun”). Set to arrive in the Philippines by the end of the year as the Coolray, it’s a sub-compact crossover, along the same lines as the Hyundai Kona, MG ZS, and upcoming Kia Seltos.

The Binyue, or Coolray if you prefer, is designed in Shanghai by a team of young and global design team. Upfront, it has Geely’s signature “expanding cosmos” grille, while at the side, it has a wing-shaped waistline. At the back? A rear bumper with an integrated diffuser, quad tailpipes, and a rather exaggerated spoiler.

Inside, Geely says the cockpit’s inspired by a jet, and this is seen in the jet-throttle inspired shifter and center console. It’s got all sorts of cool tech too such as a 7-inch full LCD instrument panel, and a 10.25-inch floating infotainment system.

Built on the BMA (B-segment Modular Architecture), it’s somewhat related to the Lynk & Co 01 and Volvo XC40 (these both ride on the CMA or Compact Modular Architecture); it can even be decked out with advanced safety tech too such as blind spot detection, lane keeping assist, a 360-degree parking camera, and even automated parking assist. However, unlike the XC40, it has to make do solely with front-wheel drive and a torsion beam rear suspension.

As for the engine, it seems the likely candidate to make it locally is the 1.5-liter 3-cylinder turbocharged gasoline engine. It makes around 175 horsepower and 255 Nm of torque which are pretty good numbers for a crossover that weighs 1,340 kilograms (you can check the specs below). There is a 1.0-liter 3-cylinder variant as well, but that one only comes with a 6-speed manual.

Will Sojitz strike gold with their decision to bring in Geely? Only time will tell. However, if this is their opening salvo, it looks they’re coming in strong, and they’re coming in hot.
